Title: where to mount on transom
Post by: rocketman2008 on April 05, 2013, 10:44:27 PM
OK Guys I hate to be such a nuisance but I am still unclear about where to mount the Transducer.

I have talked to at least 10 people about where to mount the 898C HD SI on the transom and the answers are all over the board and most of them have been that it does not matter. This includes at least 3 from Bass Pro Shop that said it did not matter and I looked at 7 or 8 of them on their showroom and  about half of them were on the left and half on the right. I guess that should be proof enough but for some reason I don't feel good about it. I am very new to all this and just bought a new 18 ft boat, a Terrova I-Pilot Link and a Humminbird 898C HD SI Combo.

I just want it to be right. Is there anyone out there with experience that can give me their opinion with confidence.

Thanks,

Don

You already have 10 opinions, how many do you need?
My opinion: Mount it like the HB owner's manual says, ON A MOUNTING BOARD so you can adjust the location. You WILL have to adjust the location. Much better to put extra holes in the mounting board than in the boat. Lots of examples here:

Most common is on starboard side because fuel lines, cables etc, are usually ran from this side.  But what is most important is what type boat do you have and available locations for mounting.

If you could post a picture of your transom or one like it, that would help greatly.

I can conclusively advise against mounting it on the same side as your transom mounted trolling motor and/or boarding ladder.

If you have both - then mount it on the boarding ladder side.

If you have one of those aforementioned items pick the other side to mount your transducer.

11 opinions are better than 10.

Other than that it make NO DIFFERENCE ..... I suggest a coin flip. A heads will give you a affirmative starboard decision. Tails, on the other hand indicates you need to flip on a best of three. If tails wins, the process moves to a best of 5 ....etc...

I guess I deserve those comments, you can study something until it dies. Thanks for the assurance. Don

rocketman,
This is not an easy question because there is not a ‘one size fits all’ answer.
How you plan on using the sonar from the 898c Si unit will make a difference.
What the boat hull is made of can make a difference.
The design of the boat hull can make a difference.
What other items are hanging off of or protruding from the transom can make a difference.

Give us a chance to help by posting some pictures of what your boat’s transom looks like.  We need to see at least one from behind showing the overall transom and at least one from each side of the transom looking across to the other side.  These needs to be at the same level as a transducer would be mounted at.

BTW: Most mount the transducers on the right (starboard) side of the boat as it is easier to route the transducer cable and there is more of a chance that the cable will be long enough to reach the unit.
