Hey guys i have the infamous questions about the 6.60 updates. I have a 898si and 858di unit that I am hesitant to update to the 6.60 version because some folks are saying that their images aren't as clear as they were with the previous versions.???
Can someone tell me what version I should load on my 898SI and my 858DI to get the best resolution and not have any issues? I do not and will not be getting the 360 or the ipilot anytime so just want the best version in my units that will give the best images.

Keep in mind that each update is unique to a particular machine,
so only people with an 898si ,and 858di have any experience with
the updates for them.
You do not want to go to a software version that is earlier than
what your unit was shipped with. I hear, you could actually
damage some of your hardware if you do.
Sometimes, updates don't go well and you will have to
devote some time, just to get your machine back to where it
was. The worst cases have resulted in people sending their
unit in to have Humminbird unlock it , and do the update.
If your unit is working well, you don't have to update.
I would search the forums for information on a particular
update, then after a few months of no problems, then
it may be safe.
Use extreme caution with updates.
You could go from a perfectly great running machine to
one that is completely useless.

You do not want to go to a software version that is earlier than what was installed in your unit when you purchased it. It could harm your unit! If you know what version was on your unit originally you can go back to that version. From what I have been able to gather from several Humminbird related sites these two software versions 6.420 and 6.490 were the last updates without issues. I am running 6.420 which is the version that's lets you remove the data display on the side imaging view. Good luck and hope this helps.

The reason that you don't want to go back to software older than your unit is that there may be internal hardware changes that are dependent on the version of software the unit shipped with. There may also be internal "firmware" that doesn't get updated with a software update that would not be compatable with older software.
Most updates don't alter the resolution of the unit. The exception to that would be the current 6.6 update. Some people have reported that the SI image seems better........I wouldn't recommend updating to that revision right now, however, due to the amount of bugs still being reported with it.
