Title: 360 imaging directional GPS
Post by: o from wi on March 09, 2013, 10:08:26 AM
I just installed a 360 imaging unit. It comes with a "directional" GPS antenna (puck). While trolling for crappies I noticed the MPH on the new GPS was off by .5 MPH from 0 to 1.3 MPH. After that it matched the other GPS reading I got. In the past all my GPS's (i-pilot, Lawrance and 998) had the same reading of .9 MPH. NOW the reading on my 1198 is .4 to .5 MPH. Factory said they have a .5 margin of error. That "margin of error" is to ACTUAL MPH. I gon't care what the actual MPH is,,,, I just KNOW crappies like it best when my GPS's read .9 MPH. Anyone else find this too???? Should I put the "non" directional puck back on??? I would THINK it is a software issue.

I have been seeing this same complaint about the new puck with the heading sensor on other forums.....maybe Greg will check in the first of the week an give you more info.

Let us know how the 360 works out helping you locate crappie.

Bob B,
I answered this on another forum (BBC?) where o from wi also posted.  The difference is in the difference in how each GPS Receiver calculates the speed.

What happened today 3/11/13
I was told to hook my 1198 up to its own power. That would fix the interference issue,,,, I added another battery,,,, WRONG! Same distortion when I put power to my i-pilot.

NEW PROBLEM!
360 would not deploy all the way. Notice showed up on screen and unit shut down and rebooted. When I scrolled through the views none of the 360 views showed up?? I lowered the 360 manually. The views now showed up BUT said the 360 was not deployed?? Unit shut down and rebooted. After reboot the 360 views AGAIN were not available??? I gave up on this problem to work on my GPS issue.

I took the wires off the 1198 and installed them one at a time. I did this because I was interchanging my GPS antennas. I connected a NEW GPS puck and found the speed to be incorrect as with my first directional GPS puck. I connected my GP50 puck and my speed issue was solved except I lost my direction when not moving. So now my SPEED WAS RIGHT!!

OH LOOK!!!  AFTER I pulled the power cord and reinstalled it,,,, the 360 WORKED TOO???????  For a while that is.

I am going out again Thurs or Fri and going to run my OLD 998 which I NEVER had ANY OF THESE issues with. If it works like it did before,,, my 1198 will be going BACK TO THE NEST!!!

The 360 is new, and there is bound to be quirks with it.
Make sure you are routing your 1198 power wires away
from other wires.  If they have to cross, cross at right
angles.

Have you had your batteries load tested?
It doesn't matter if they are new.
It doesn't matter if you know they are good.

The 360 issue is seperate from the screen issue. DI and SI ONLY are effected when I turn on i-pilot. This DID NOT HAPPEN with my 998! Power on and power off?????????

Looks like trolling motor interference on the 1198 unit; you will need to contact the Humminbird Customer Resource folks about this.
Was the 998 tested using the same cables?

Yes to the same cables.

The 1198 may be a lot more sensitive than the 998.
I would look at it as a new install, and follow Greg's advice
as to contacting Humminbird.
I'm sure Humminbird customer service has gotten very good at
helping people with interference issues, since the problem is
very prevalent.
