If so, does it just plug I to the back?
Is it more accurate than the GPS speed indicator?
Thanks!
-
It'll tell you the current speed, not necessarily the speed on ground. So, if you're anchored up in a river in a 3mph current, your screen will say you're doing 3mph standing still.
-
GPS is supposed to be the most accurate.
-
You will need the AS-T-Y to do this.
Whether GPS or paddlewheel speed is more accurate is a widely debated topic...
-
Really Greg?
For speed over the water, GPS isn't considered to be the most accurate?
Especially when the new models receive signals 4 times a second?
I thought GPS speed was a huge improvement over paddle wheel speed.
-
Does the GPS on the 798ci si hd update 4x/second? I'm a little meticulous about my speed when trolling so I want to utilize the most accurate means to get a speed reading.
Has anyone used both? Can both speed readings be displayed simultaneously?
-
There aren't that many GPS receivers available for Humminbird units, so I'd guess
that all of the current receivers probably receive at 4 times a second. Greg could
confirm that.
I don't think you can display both speed sensors at the same time.
Because the icon just says 'SPEED'. If it said 'SPEED(GPS)' or 'SPEED(WHEEL)'
then I guess it would be possible. Greg can also confirm.
There's a new GPS receiver that has a heading sensor that will show you what direction
the boat is pointing at very slow speeds. It will work with your 798ci. Some Walleye fishermen troll at very slow speeds and complained for years about not being able to see the directional arrow on their map below .5mph. This new receiver fixes that. Here is the information from the Humminbird site:
AS GPS HS - Accessories 408400-1.GPS Receiver with Heading Sensor
Precision GPS/WAAS receiver provides fast position fixes accurate within
2.5 meters. Provides more accurate position fixes than the industry standar GPS.
You could also purchase a separate speed paddle wheel with a separate speed gauge if you
wanted to use both.

Like I said: “widely debated topic...”.
Which is more accurate or better can be influenced by how the accessories are mounted, how they are used, what speeds they are used at and what is the expectation level for each.

Yes the 798ci HD Si units have a 4x/second update rate.
Yes the paddlewheel speed (aka: “Water Speed”) can be shown along with the (GPS) speed on the unit at the same time.

Thank you guys! Any chance you have a link to the accessory I'd need to make the paddle wheel work with my 798?

Here is a link to the AS-T-Y cable on the Humminbird web site:

You may be able to find is cheaper elsewhere.

Thanks Greg! $40??!! Ouch. Anyone selling them cheaper?
-
Check around at some of the on-line stores. We have to sell at MSRP and I think that stores have to advertise at the same price but many sell for less than MSRP, so you will have to contact them to get their real price.
