Title: 787c2i display problem
Post by: snowman48047 on February 23, 2013, 09:00:39 AM
I have a 787c2i I bought in 2007. I install the head unit each time I go out and remove it at the end of the day. I used it for 5 years with no problems at all.  Last fall the screen started showing horozontal lines on it. The colors have become different too.  I thought the power or other connections mght be the cause because I could power off, remove the unit, reinstall it and power back on and it would be fine for a while, 5 to 20 minutes. Starting with the October duck season this was the issue all the time, nothing would get it to display normally. I used it through December with this problem.  Before I send it in is there anything I can check myself? The battery tests ok, it is my acc battery, not the starting battery.  I have the latest software.

I have posted a pic... The black lines are not the issue.

Could all the connections be worn from the constant R&R?  Is there a way to thoroughly clean the pins?  What else can I do?

OK so I reinstalled the latest software after resetting factory defaults. Apparently loading updated software didn't take the first time.  I also ran a brand new power line between the fully charged battery and the head unit (nothing else plugged in) in the garage on the workbench. Still have the same horo line/display issue.  I guess this rules out everything on the boat.  Since I don't want to open it up I guess I will have to send it in.  :(

I’m not seeing the horizontal lines that you posted about... am I just blind?

I don't see it either, but I have noticed
my vision getting worse each year. :)

Okay, I see it now on the original picture you posted. I had first thought that it was something with the picture itself.  What I am seeing makes it look like there is a space between each row of pixels in the display.  I don’t know what would cause this, maybe the display starting to fail?

When I had it on the bench pushing buttons something didn't seem right.  Seems to push in to far.  Maybe something inside is loose?  Never noticed anything before using it in the boat. I need to just send it in but can the display be repaired? Replaced? What might a repair cost be?  I can't spend $500 on a $850 item.  Where do I need to send it?

Thanks for the help Greg.

On the Humminbird website it says the cost to repair
your unit is $180.45.
See Link:http://www.humminbird.com/FAQ.aspx?ContentId=1764 (http://www.humminbird.com/FAQ.aspx?ContentId=1764)
They only accept money orders or credit cards - no personal checks.

Here is the return form link.  The address where to mail the unit is in there:http://www.humminbird.com/uploadedFiles/Humminbird/Content/Support/FAQ/Humminbird%20Unit%20Repair%20Return%20Form.pdf (http://www.humminbird.com/uploadedFiles/Humminbird/Content/Support/FAQ/Humminbird%20Unit%20Repair%20Return%20Form.pdf)

Plus I would call ahead and speak with a CRC Rep to get all your information logged in.  That way there should be no questions when they receive your unit (questions = delays).

Try to clean up the power connection betwean the unit and the power cable. Use a needle or something. There might also be a bad connection ?

Kimi.. :-\

Ya I tried using emery cloth and it did clean up the pins a bit and I used a brand new out of the bag power supply on a good fully charged battery. The result was no change so I will just send it in.  I'm kind of disappointed that I've had 2 display units go bad.  This one and the first one I ever bought, a 405sx.  Maybe I'll sell this after the repair and look at a different brand.... I don't know.  I just need my electronics to work when I need them....   :-[

Snowman,
Shortly after I bought my 1197, the screen started to
blink on and off at precise intervals.  I had to send it in.
Then about a year later, the screen went so dark, that
I could barely see it.  I had to send it in again.
No problems at all after that.

Before you send your unit in, I have to ask:
Have you added anything new electrical to your boat that
may contribute to this problem (VHF radio, electric shaver, cd player, electric duck call :))?
Just trying to be thorough and rule out interference.

You have to consider too, that 5 years is a pretty good run on an electrical
device without any problems.

No new electrical stuff at all. Actually no electrical stuff period minus this FF. No radio, no ship to shore, not even a bow mount trolling motor.  Factory lights, livewell pump, and bilge pump and thats it. I even run a seperate deep cycle under the console that only powers the FF unless I use my transom mount trolling motor (2 or 3 times a year). The 787 is the ONLY addition I've made to the factory boat package back in 2001 and it is an upgrade from the 405sx I had dealer installed.  Never had interference issue before so I doubt there is now?  I understand its 5 years old but it should last longer than that.... maybe.   The mount for it is about shot (I will replace it if I keep this unit) as I said I install and remove the head unit for each fishing trip.  But with the new power cord I eliminated the in boat connections...

My boat is a 20' 2000 Lund Alaskan SS with a 2001 50hp Merc bigfoot and a 2001 Merc 9.9 kicker.  I think I'll look at different units (HB upgrade) or brands (Lowrance/Garmin?) when I repower in a couple months.

It also depends not only on the age of your units, but
how many hours you actually use them.

If you put in a lot of long fishing days throughout the year, then
it's going to take it's toll on your unit.

Also, removing and re-installing it, is not the best scenario,
but it's understandable that sometimes it has to be done for
security reasons.

I had done a bi of research when I bought it but didn't find anything suitable.  Have there been any recent developements as to locking these units or others into the mounts?  I would love to leave it plugged in under the console cover.  I could make my own big ugly bracket but I don't want big and ugly....

I believe I'd find another boat to try my unit on before I either sent it to HB or tossed it.

That would definitely tie down if unit or installation.

Just my $.02, but I think I'd clear some of those tracks also.

I run a 787 on the bow of my Skeeter.  Have since 2007.  On and off for every trip.  Have never seen anything that looks like that.

OK folks I sent the unit in for repar and it was indeed a screen/display issue.  I just got it back and opened the box and was going to test it in the garage.  2 opposite corners of the new screen weren't even snapped into place.  >:(  Now this wasn't a cheap unit to start with and the repair wasn't either so I would have expected a little more thourougness when putting it back together.  I got 1 corner to snap down by pushing a little but I can not force this down so it snaps together.

My question;  should I attempt to lift/remove this screen and resnap it in place or send it in again?  I called and they are sending me a shipping label but it will be another couple weeks before I get it back.  What should I do?    :'(

I would remove it and try to snap it back into place.  It is just a bezel that does not seal the display or lens.  Just be sure that the seal around the map/memory card door is in place (I think these had that).

OK I took the bezel off. I was simply concerned that the display was part of it (I've had problemes taking things apart before and ruining things ;D).  There was a good sized strip off sealer that was prevernting it from snapping in fully. I carefully trimmed that and it is ALMOST fully seated. I think I can live with it. Hooked it up to battery on my workbench and the display looks awesome now. Latest software and all waypoints/tracks restored. And yes this has the door for the memory card.  Thanks to Everyone for the help and info on this.  Great site!

Glad it turned out alright (should never have left that way…).
At least you didn’t have extra parts left over like I when I take things apart sometimes…  ::)
