Hi guys I actually think I have my 1198 figured only problem I am having is telling how big fish are on side imaging? I see tons of small specks but I'm not sure if they are smaller fish or baitfish. Is there a rule of thumb for how far your scanning and fish size? Any help would be much appreciated because its about to drive me crazy!!!

To me, understanding the SI display is a lot like looking at an Xray.
The information is there, you just have to know what your looking at.
Some fish are easy to see, some are not.
Another variable is where they are located in relation to the transducer,
ie, high/low in water column, near/far from the boat, in/near cover, if they were parallel/perpendicular to the SI beam .... it goes on.
The fish normally show as white marks. Sometimes in a ball or scattered group or individual fish.
It takes time and experience and then you end up taking an educated guess until you catch one.
Here's a link to good HB site that is primarily fishing orientated. Don't miss the seminar in the lower right corner. It's a hour long.
 Your going to do fine.

It kind of depends on some of your settings such as scroll speed.  Boat speed can also affect how things look. Its all about experience..

Heres a school of walleyes at  2.8 mph

Sometimes if the fish are big enough you will see a shadow These shots are of Barramundi[attachimg=1][attachimg=2][attachimg=3][attachimg=4]

Try running a deep diving lure past the ducer beam at the side of the boat, you can then see how big the echo is and scale it to your situation and speed
