I purchased a 998si last year for the console of my 18 tracker and love it.
Now im looking for a unit for up front but I know I cant afford another SI model to link to it like I want so thats not happenin this year .
Im looking at the cheaper$200-300 gray scale sonar/di units from humminbird and was wondering if its worth buying a cheap combo/gps(581) unit if it doesnt link to my 998? Would it be more of a pain to transfer waypoints and tracks etc between the 2 units? Or would it be more beneficial having the gps up front for staying on top of offshore waypoints etc? I would definitely want my gps coordinates from my 998 on the unit up front if i go this route.
Am I better off getting sonar/DI(571hd di) model without gps? They also show the 718 basic ff having the option to hook up to a gps receiver and work as a track plotter?
Another option would be to set up the front(SI transducer, gps, TM mount) for my 998SI and have to change it out from console to up front after running the gas, which could be a pain.
I think I know which direction im headed which is the 571 but wanted to hear what you guys think.

If I were you id look at some of the big fishing forums on the web check the classifieds and watch for a used unit that will link to yours. It will be so much easier for you and I see tons of units bought and sold on them. Just to name a few of those forums theres walleyecentral.com, ohio game fishing board, the hull truth, and great lakes fisherman. Im not sure where your located but these are all US boards. You can also check out if your location has its own fishing fourm. These are all great lakes fishing boards other than the hull truth.

Have you ever thought of just buying a second transducer and using your same head unit for up front as well? You can use a switch to switch between the trolling motor and transom transducers and just move the head unit. If you have a RAM mount this is especially easy.

any HD or ethernet capable unit should be able to link to the 998.
