Title: Scratch on the screen
Post by: Salonen on December 12, 2009, 05:32:05 PM
Hello.
I have few scratch on the screen, one is quite deep. How to fix them? Especially when sun is shining they are very disturbing.

I would recommend a screen protector, but thats not necessarily going to fix te scratches.  It may however help to cover them and blend them in so they are less apparent in sunlight.

If that doesn't help, you can send it in to Humminbird and have them replace the screen.  When the new one comes, a screen protector is a must!

Good Luck,

Robert

Hi Salonen,

I recently installed a screen protector on my 1197 and it does hide defects.  If the scratch is deep it may not hide it totally, but should disguise it enough to help you look past it and after a while you will forget it is there.  Also the screen protector make it much easier to clean the screen and not have to be concerned about ruining the coating that help view the screen in the sunlight.

If you do put a screen protector on get a good one, make sure you clean the screen well with the right solution (get the water spots off), I believe the right stuff is Windex with Vinegar.  Make sure you follow the the manufacturers instructions.

The alternative is to spend alot of money replacing the screen.

Hello.
Thank's for advise Robert and George.
One of my friend told that it is possible to use vegetable oil. A thin layer that oil will fill those scratches, but I'am not so eager to try that method. So maybe I use a screen protecor.

There is a product out that will work for you. I have used it for years. It is an aircraft winshield product for plexiglass. It's called plexus. Not sure if it's available where you are. The last time I called the company to order it and had to buy a case. Look it up on the net.

If plexus is a polish of some sort I would not use it.  Depending on the unit he has either a plastic or glass lens over the display.  Some have IR and polarizer coatings on the inside and some outside of the lens, so using a polish could remove this coating which could lead to other problems.

I stand corrected... Thanks for that info. I have not used it on my 987 but have used it on all my other units over the years....
