Title: Out of the box
Post by: spes on January 22, 2013, 02:38:43 PM
Hello,
I just ordered a 798 ci HD Si.
Can't wait to for it to get here!
Any suggestions,  do's and don'ts when I take it out of the box?
I imagine it will need an update.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks,

On the "do" side, I would recommend going here    http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFBA73CD339FC6B95 (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFBA73CD339FC6B95)    and watching most of Doug's videos.
If you want to better understand what the SI screen represents, watch #13.

Also, get yourself set up to power up the unit in the house.  This will allow you to "play" with the unit and get used to the menus and settings. There are quite a few posts about that if you search this forums.  If you have more questions about that post them here.

I wouldn't update now unless you need to get I-Pilot link or the 360 working right away.  The version on the unit should be a stable version, and there are a few issues with the newest version that is still being worked out.  Watch this forum and do an update once you quit seeing problem reports on the new version.

I ordered a pc3 kit with the unit.
I have already started the videos..think I'm on # 5.

I can't wait to jack recorded trips into my 52" plasma  ;D
From what I have read,,,when I record a day on the water,.. then watch it on the big screen (thru the unit ) if I see structure I want to mark,, it will save it,, correct?

Yes, your marked waypoints will be saved......Just make sure you power the unit down using it's power button.....don't shut it off externally.  The unit saves some of the data when powering off.

spes,
There is no video output on the 798ci HD Si units.

No video out! Bummer.
So the only way to watch on the big screen is to remove SD card and transfer to TV?
(which means I can't spot something on the big screen and mark it?)

Surprised it can't vid out with the ethernet capabilities.

There are 3rd party programs such as Humviewer and yellowfin that allow you to view the recordings.

However if you keep up with the forums, it looks like none of the third party software packages work with the latest firmware release. So.. it may be quite a while before you can view on a large screen.

I remember reading that there was a possibility that HB was going to re-do HBPC and add extra features, if they were to add playback capability then you could use HBPC.

Another reason not to update to the 6.57 unless you need it.

You may want to "Set Simulation Position" as the chart will probably open to somewhere in Florida....

*Zoom out with the "-" key until you can see your lake....
*use the 4way cursor to move the boat icon to your lake...
*zoom in with the "+" key....
*Then go into the main menu system by pressing the "Menu" key twice....
*cursor over to the "Chart" tab...
*cursor down to "Set Simulation Position...
*cursor right to activate...

This will allow the unit to start up on your lake each time you use the Simulator..

You got something against being off the coast of Miami Rickie?   ;D

Just be sure and do this while in the forced/full simulator mode or else the unit will not remember it.

[With only the power cable connected: power on the unit and wait for it to show the Title Screen (will show the model name: “798ci HD Si Combo”), then press the MENU button and wit for three options to show up, use the four-way cursor to select “Simulator” and then use the Right Arrow to start it.]

If you have been watching Doug's videos you probably know but just a reminder..... The GPS location changes to the local area but the simulator data is still obviously from wherever it was recorded at .... just a small point..... ;)

Good one Greg....:)

I wonder.... Was the simulator recording actually made there off the coast of Miami...??

It sure shows a lot of brush for being the Atlantic Ocean...

No, the simulator data was either from Lake Eufaula, Alabama (okay, okay: Walter F. George Impoundment…) or from somewhere farther north (I don’t know where).  If it has the swimming pool on it, than it was from lake Eufaula.  I know where that pool is but didn’t until the Si units came along and have been in that area around Miami but not with an Si unit.

The Lat/Lon numbers should be accurate for the area that the simulator is playing at.

Well I tinkered with the new unit for a half hour or so.
Running it on batteries connected to a PC3 kit.

Holy cow, after a  1/2- 45 minutes the 8 AA's were toast.

Might have to hide my deep cycle under my computer desk.
(and I DO mean hide)   >:D

You can get an AC to DC adaptor that you can just plug in.  I would get one rated for at least 3 amps even though the unit specs don't call for that much.  Radio Shack or online at Amazon, many can be found.

Good idea Bob,
5 amp one goes for about $20

Is the plug on the unit unique to just HB?
I really hate to have to spend another $15-20 for the pc-10
just to be able to power it up.
I'm tempted to cut the cord on the one I have,,, cut the cord on the converter,,, and put quick disconnects on everything,,,

Yes it is unique for HB as compared to other brands.  Which is why HB has the connector issues. they are cheaper.

Smart idea to cut and make your own (water proof) quick disconnects..

I meant this set up with the quick disconnects for powering up in the house using the ac/dc converter. USING the cord I will cut off the AA battery pack that comes with the PC 3 kit.
It shouldn't need to be water proof  ;)
But while we are on that subject is it ok to lather all the connections on the power head with dielectric grease?

Opinions go both ways on that.....the grease can attract dirt.

You shouldn’t have to.  The pins and receptacles are gold plated to resist corrosion.
