Title: 998 si
Post by: mbowlan on January 20, 2013, 08:36:10 PM
finished installing my 998 this morning, went to the lake this afternoon, I noticed that only the left side is visible on the screen.  Has anyone had this problem

Does the left view fill the entire screen (ie. the "boat" is clear to the right side) or
is the boat in the center with only 1/2 the screen used?

the boat icon shows in the middle of the screen, the left side is tracking the bottom and showing images, the right sid is just a dark screen.  The transducer is mounted underneath the jackplate in the center of the boat.  The boat is an Xpress xp20cc with flotation pods.  The transducer is below the pods with clear line of sight.  When I came home I lowered the tranducer a little more into the water, and made sure that it was not tilted to either side.  I will check it tomorrow at the lake again.  To my knowledge there is no way to check this out of the water.

the boat icon shows in the middle of the screen-- just wanted to make sure you had the left only/both/ right only choice correct.
To my knowledge there is no way to check this out of the water--- that's the best way for a SI issue.
Be aware that the beam ( I think it was Rickard that pointed this out ) radiates slightly above level L/R .
Lowering the transducer should be a good 1st step.

If you could post a pic of the install. And possibly a pic of the screen (snapshot)...
SI transducers are subject to signal blockage over most other transducers and need a good clear view of left and right.
Surface or bottom of boat or motor reflection can interrupt the return.
Once in a while there have been bad transducers elements.
The pic will certainly help in problem determination..

If you saw no sonar returns in the right Si sonar, then it sounds more like a transducer or unit issue then in the placement of the transducer.  If there were some blockage of the right Si beam; there should also some sonar returns in the right Si sonar.  No sonar returns means either a total blockage of the right Si sonar (which should be noticeable) or a problem with the unit or transducer itself.  If you can, try and test your unit on someone else’s boat and/or their unit on your boat.  Any of the Humminbird Si units will work for this and not just another 998 unit.
