Title: correct transducer mounting instructins?
Post by: freezerfiller on January 19, 2013, 05:21:51 PM
I worked on the install today.  Got the old unit out and got everything fished and connected.  The instructions how a transducer that has ratchets on the sides.  This is nothing like the ducer that came with mine.  I tried to mount it with hardware supplied, but it's loose as a goose.  any ideas on where I can find instructions for a ducer with smooth sides and a bracket with 3 mounting slots?

I'm unable to post any pics until Tuesday.  But if you go to humminbird.com and look at the 998c SI.  It is that exact bracket and ducer in the picture.  If I took a pic, it would look just like it, with the cross pin going through the top hole with the screw plastic washer and stainless washer all as shown.  The problem is that I can tighten that top screw all the way and there is still play between the ducer and bracket.  There were two star washers in the kit that I put on the lower two screws, that might be in the wrong place,  I might try relocating to the upper bolt, but then I'd be concerned about the lower section coming loose.  I might be able to post a vid on youtube from my phone, but I left my laptop at the office.

i had watched an installation video on youtube about this, they stated that it was normal to have some movement. Mine has it too but, i don't think that it has an affect on the performance. I do believe that it is build like this so in case the ducer snags on something in the water it can "break away" without causing you to have to replace the ducer itself. Maybe some others will chime in....

Yes, it does seem you have installed correctly and as hvychev77 said there is some play in it to provide kickup if hit. there have been previous posts about the SI kicking up while on speed. Another post I cant find it right now. about putting a piece of rubber in the block to help buffer speed, although that might override the kickup feature as designed.

I will try to look some more on this for you..

Well I picked up some stainless steel washers and snugged it up.  It was just too much play to feel I would get accurate readings when I go into deep water this summer.   Thanks for the all the help.  It is aggrevating however to read the instructions a couple of times before starting the job, only to find a completely different product that installs differently than what is on the instructions....  Hopefully I'll be able to get it wet tomorrow and test the position of the ducer.

OK, good work......do let us know how this works out.
Instructions can be frustrating at times. Especially if they are wrong or inacurate.....or missing.....
Great that you hung in there and figured out a solution..

freezerfiller,
As hvychev77 stated: that play is in there to allow the transducer to pivot upwards should something strike it while the boat is moving forwards.  The side ‘ears’ of the metal bracket have to be able to move outwards to do this.  What you may have just done is disable the kick-up feature.

The correct instructions for your transducer can be found here:
