Title: ALL SI Models - How about a 110v transformer that plugs right up?

Suggested Upgrade:	How about a 110v transformer that plugs right up?
Explanation:	Something that you can plug into the wall and converts to 12vdc and plugs into your unit so you can become familiar with it indoors in the comfort of home.

It is available in most electronic stores, hardware stores and places like basspro, walmart and similiar businesses. In fact there are boat dealers who have this. The power cord is inexpensive from HB. Or you can very easily construct your own cord.

The HB cable is PC 10 for pre 1100 series units and the PC11 is for 1100's plus 797,997,798. Either costs about $20 USD..If carefull you can make a connector for your unit to make it home friendly...

Hmm, must have missed it.  I knew I could make my own, I was going to use the old power wheels transformer, I didn't know they were for sale that plugged right into my ff  however!  Thanks.

They dont make a plug and fit but the cost of the transformer is cheap and gettting a plug (for the unit) is easy to make.
I agree that a plug and fit would be nice but the cost from a manufacture over what you can build would be pretty high.
A lot have built their own power for the house or garage usage.
If you ask nicely  ;D  some of the guys here might even send you pictures of their builds..
We (our team) wanted portability of our units and made simple adapters for ours.  We did purchase the HB cable but now that we know we could have also made our own..

Getting back to the wish.  I agree,...It would be nice to have such an item. No muss no fuss just plug and go. 
Maybe HB will see this and decide to have some of these.  If they will keep the price affordable and reasonable I think this is a great wish idea.

Not a problem Chuck,  I thought I knew my way around a bass pro pretty well....  I never quite got the plug right on my garmin, so point me on how to make a plug for the back of my 998c.

FF, I would take the unit to an electronics place and show them what you have, That is always good to see what someone is talking about. Now the connector does not have to be fancy. you can get from the electronics place a pin that fits the terminal(s) on your unit, and attach wires to the pins. Color one red (+) and one green or white (-) so you will know which one to connect where.
If the electronic shop is not all that convincing then it might be best to get a PC 10 or 11 cable from HB and then connect it to the power supply. If you are electrically challenged the maybe a friend who know some basic electric can help..
It is not too dificult but the relationship of positive and negative pins are important.

After I had hijacked your idea I got to thinking that for those who are not electrical rocket scientists that maybe just maybe what you suggested might be a great idea.
Let us know what you do.

I'm pretty electrically savvy, I just need to know which pin is which on the unit  + or - on the top?  But yeah, I'd pay a little for a pre packaged piece that I didn't have to break out the solder and go to Radio shack, and had a nice plug like the one that comes with the unit...hence putting it in the wishlist section. ;)

you can hook your cable into the boat power and then measure the power pins to see which is positive and which is negative. In the meantime I will see if I can get a diagram for your unit....

After the hijack I am convinced a wall supply and cable would be nice...

OK, looked at the manual and it is not very good at the pin.  However look at your cable on the boat that goes to the battery. the lead with the fuse is the positive lead.  You should be able to trace from there...

Duh,  I got it...  Just checked it with a voltmeter. The positive is on top for future reference.

Just had another idea.   take the HB cable and cut it in two.  make a plug to reconnect but will still allow you to take off the new plug, leaving the HB cable on the unit and then make a third plug to fit the one you made at the cut..  This may not cost you a lot money. Radio shack has lots of connectors. since you have the voltmeter you can keep wires straight.
You can probably run your unit on the bench without a large power supply. It is fused at three amps but without the transducer it should opperate great on 1 amp of supply..

Hijack or not...... if you can do it (make your own) but if challenged I still say the wish is a great idea..

Good idea.... except that extra connector on the unit power cable is a great spot for corrosion to collect when the unit is in the boat.  If you start buying waterproof connectors for a project like this you may end up paying as much as a spare cable from HB anyway.

Update.... the 12v 2A power wheels charger is no match for the 998cSI....  It powers up and then shuts off.  It works fine on my spare 12v battery however...  I checked the power supply and the 12v power wheels charger is only putting out 11vdc.  See how much easier this would be if I could just buy one that worked online!!

Yep, I cant argue.  As I said after my first post.  It would be great to have such an iterm off the shelf..
But since we stringed out the conversation, it is something that can be done but not without some effort.

If HB will read this thread they will see there is a value for such an item...

The problem with that is that the units would then have to pass FCC compliance testing as they would be connected to ‘the grid”.  This what was told to me many years ago when this was first asked for.  This would mean additional design and testing costs which would be passed on to the buyer.  :'(

Might not be as hard or as expensive as you've heard.  the unit might be considered an unintentional transmitter, particularly without the ducer...and might only be needed to be verified tested by an independent lab.  Id bet it would still be worth it on the # of units HB is selling these days.   It would definitely be a nice addition to the accessory lineup.

Phooy...These transformers are on the market right now. Adding the HB plug to the end is all that it costs. The transformers are already compliant.  We are not asking HB to design a new transformer.. Look at all the transformers out there now for phones, computers (this is a computer) and a bunch of other electrical devices. Battery chargers, 12 volt inverters. The only missing piece is the specific HB plug..

Not sure what your trying to do but couldn't you just use another fuse holder ? Unscrew the holder take unit in house ( a little more complicated with a 798 ) & screw in to the other one hooked to the transformer . Fuse holders are cheap aren't they ?

If your cables are not buried in the boat and behind the dash.
 A good idea for connecting if you have access to the full wires..
Unhook the pos (fuse) and neg and attach the transformer to those leads..
