Title: Cold weather storage
Post by: nihsif on January 14, 2013, 08:40:12 AM
I have a detached, uninsulated garage and am in north country, temps below zero are possible.

I store my electronics in the garage... is that proper? Should I store in a heated room in the house?

Electronics are warm weather pieces of equipment unless it has been specifically made for extreme cold.
With computer and sonars I would suggest storing in a place above freezing.
Caution is the best suggestion as opposed to hurting your unit.

That would be the safest thing to do.  Hope the connect and disconnect is not too much work.  But will probably be the best in the long run..

I have stored four units, two HB and two lowrance/eagle locators in my garage for 14 years every winter and get temps here as low as 10 or 12 below a few times, I live in central illinois so we do see the cold some years

all with never a problem

I think that humidity/moisture would be a
bigger threat to the units, rather than cold
temperatures.

If they are kept in a dry building/shed, then
they would probably be Ok.

Leaving them outside, uncovered would be
about the worst thing for them.

If you have any doubt then take the safe approach. Dont risk your unit as repair can be quite expensive.
As several have pointed out there are related influences that could harm your unit.  If very cold is the norm then I would suggest keeping it warm..
