Title: 998c SI - failed update to v6_490 - SD
Post by: kentashiburo on December 15, 2012, 02:20:27 PM
Hello Greg, everyone

I downloaded the latest firmware from HB website 6_490, reset the unit to factory default, inserted the SD card, new version detected, selected the upgrade, chose no for abort upgrade and here's what's happened:

1) Red-ish screen appeared - upgrading to ver 490
2) After 1 sec, the screen turned black - upgrading software
3) Message - Do not turn power off
4) Rebooting
5) Unit came back up -  and the detected new upgrade available message appeared again

At this stage I realized that the unit did not upgrade the firmware, so I thought must be a corrupted file

I re-downloaded the file, and thinking of a crc process I used the HBPC to write it to the SD after I formatted the card

Did the 1-5 steps again....same thing

I removed the SD from slot1 and inserted it in slot 2.
Same thing happened, only that at step 4 it said Shutting Down, but the characters were just half displayed.
I knew something was wrong

Right now, the unit is in a loop, and the problem seems to be the SD card

Boots up, loading software, screen freezes for a sec or 2 and then shutting down

Anything I can do to avoid sending the unit back??? I know that 998c doesn't support PC upgrades/bootstrap

Any help appreciated!
KT

KTt a quick check.  This upgrade is for your unit and not some other correct. corrupted downbloads are a problem especially with the internet today. Call HB support Monday and keep on them to help (as in answer). You may have to send back in.  HB does have issues with upgrades (software) and related corruption possibly with waypoints at the same time..Check that your upgrade is the only thing on your sd card.
Delete lanything else. Try to download one more time..
Otherwise.  HB support is your best bet..

As a last ditch effort, before returning the unit, maybe try downloading the previous
level software to a SD card and see if it will go back to it. Make sure nothing else is on the card.

Hmmmmmm.... Where did you get that information ? I had thought the bootstrap information might be a backup plan if I ever had a problem with my 998c  :-\

I think I read that all 998c models were built with the Linux OS.....

The bootstrap method does not work with the Linux OS...

Rodger would be correct: the bootstrap method does not work with the Linux OS units like the 998c Si.
If an older version of software will not load (I would only go back to the 6.420 version) than you will have to send it in to Humminbird to be reprogrammed.
