Title: Recording Issues
Post by: Consigliere on November 27, 2012, 08:12:12 AM
I recently got a new to me 987c SI Humminbird finder and tried to make my first recording the other day.  I have  a 32GB SDHC card as well as Navionics Gold Great Lakes chip card.

When trying to do my first recording, went to the recording view and started the recording.  Proceeded to fish for several hours and the "RECORDING" message came up all the time so it appeared everything was working without issue.

After about 4hrs, the fish finder shut down.  I powered up again, and assumed the SD card had been filled.  When I got home, loaded the SD card into my PC and went to the RECORD folder and RECORD001.dat was only 1KB?  I put it back into the finder and tried to replay and it didn't play anything back.  It would open the recording without issue and show an initial depth of 26ft but that's it, no more data.

Any thoughts on what I did wrong here?  Newbie so not sure how to troubleshoot this stuff.

I would guess that the recording was so big, that the sd card filled up, and
the recording file could not close properly.
4 hours is a sh@t load of information.

It has been suggested before to make several small recordings
instead of one huge one.
They are also easier to view that way.

Thanks for the reply.  I was thinking that, and explains why the unit shut itself down, but again NEWBIE so wanted to get some advice.

Have to be concious of that going forward.

I don’t know that a full SD card would make your unit shut down.  I do know that if you do not stop the recording that the data can be corrupted or lost.  I would check all power connections to your 987c Si unit to make sure that nothing is loose or corroded – don’t forget the fuse and fuse holder.

While you are at it: check and see which software version you are using.  Software version 3.740 added the SDHC memory card capability.  If you are running a software version older than that the unit may not interact with your 32 SDHC memory card correctly.

Thanks Greg.  I did not explicitly stop the recording so likely the cause of the issue.  Not sure on the power down, never happened before and hasn't happened since.

I'm not sure of the software version, but will check tonight.  It did record several snapshots onto the card that I can get onto the PC so I assume SDHC is OK but will confirm the software is up to date.
