Was re-reading upgrade for 798 and noticed the addition of AIS using a DSC VHF radio and the ASPC2 serial connection.
Was wanting to know if anyone has utilised this feature and what radio was used (i.e Uniden,Lowrance etc). Would be interested in Australian users given my location and proliferation of coal and ore vessels thinking could be a handy addition.
If not can anyone from HB advise at to the equipment required to make the happen?
Cheers.

Where did you find the 798 being able to do AIS?

flatcat_auz,
We can’t make a recommendation for one company’s AIS system over another company’s AIS system. I think that all of the connection cables and all are listed in the web pages you posted.

More asking what units (VHF DSC) are more compatible and easy to set up with the humminbird unit. Plug and play is the way and was seeking those who already run this type of system with no problems. What about the fisho's HB sponsors, what do they run for example? Don't tell me it's Lowrance >:D

I don’t work with the Pro Staff folks so I don’t know what VHF DSC radios they use or if any of them are using DSC radios at all.

I have my 997 hooked up to a DSC VHF radio. I believe it's only 2 or 3 wire hookup coming from the GPS connector pigtail.

Do you think it's worth spending the extra $$$$ on a DSC for AIS?
Seems to look good especially as I can at times, fish near major shipping lanes and a working harbour.
Cheers.

That is up to you. I don't have AIS capability on my 'bird let alone any friends that have vhf on their boat. AIS will display other units on your humminbird that are on and transponding.

If you are in fishing lanes or traffic areas it might be good. Also the emergency transpond is a good coastal area tool.
USCG does monitor at times..

These are my thoughts. I'm based in Australia and we a are currently moving dirt (read minerals, coal, iron ore, copper, bauxite blah blah blah) by ship faster then we can get it out of the ground. Whilst their anchor chains attract Mahi Mahi or Dolphin fish as we know them by, they move fast and whilst massive can at time be hard to see at night.
