Title: Basic Sonar Imaging on a ROV
Post by: farnoise on October 25, 2012, 09:48:50 AM
Hello All,
I am very new to the sonar scanning technology, but I am trying to enable my ROV with image scanning technology, after a while of research I have been directed to this forume, and so far I see this is where i need to be.
My question is can someone direct me to the right direction regarding this? I am doing ROV as a hobby and don't have big budget, are any ways so I can build my own imaging system? how to set up my ROV with scanning ? Are there any experimental systems that I can work with?

Regards

farnise, Welcome!

I have three ROV's that have DIY Fwd scan and side scan systems that I have built or adp to fit my needs.

The most used ROV is a SEAMORE sn# 18 with a Hummingbird HDSI 180-T transducer to a Humminbird 1198 unit and a Interphase TwinScope Fwd Looking Sonar 180' imaging system controled by three HP Pavilion dv7-6178us laptops.
Sounds like a mess of stuff but it works REEL GOOD. :)
This gives the system Video,SI/DI,Fwd Vert/Hor imaging,Alt, Water temp at depth.
I have also built a number of towfish units.

If I can be of help just let me know.

PS: Right now adp a Fisher Magnetometer to the ROV system. ;D

Thank you so much Roddy,
very informative, but my problem is I dont have that much money. I am a student, and I was looking for a way to kind of put something together, again I am not looking for sophisticated 3D imgaing machine, I just need a basic concept that I can put to test, Something more experimental than practical!!

Do you think it's something doable?

farnoise, 1. Do you have a ROV yet ?

             2. If so what make and model ?

Roddy; I believe there was a miss-communication. I have built my own ROV. I designed the structure and built everything from scratch(Aluminium), it has 6 motor, and a camera. Agian it's project of my own, and now I am looking for a way to integrate a SONAR Imaging to it.
On another note, do you think I can use ultrasonic sensor instead? I never used ultra-sonic under water, so I dont know if it will work or not

Thanks

farnoise, Yep miss comm My bad. I have built a few ROVs myself over the years it's fun!

Ultra-sonic, High freq, low power, tranducer surface contact req, as I understand it used for NDT/NDI, and the Medical field.

I do not think this would work in a underwater apt as Ulta-sound is low powered and needs suface contact it work.

Ulta-sound is used in underwater ship hull inspection.
