Title: Thru Hull Transducers
Post by: wrktoomuch on October 15, 2012, 07:46:42 PM
Can someone help me with a link to the actual overall dimensions of the SI thru hull transducers for a 997. I need something that is fairly low profile as the boat is stored on a rack and occasionally trailered. I know some use the transom SI and an additional thru hull, but with an outboard and trim tabs, I think I will have difficulties.

I don’t have a link but I can give you the dimensions.
The Thru-Hull HDSi transducer (XPTH-9-HDSi-180-T) body sticks downwards from the hull about 1.3 inches (it is tapered from about 0.6” to 1.3”).  This assumes that there is no fairing block used in the mounting between the transducer body and the boat hull.

Remember that where ever you mount this transducer it will have to have a clear left-right pathway from the transducer out to both sides or you will be blocking one of the Si sonar beams.  Mounted flush to the hull may not allow one of the Si beams to clear the keel.

Thank you Greg. It seems to me that unless this is mounted almost on the keel, than it would have interference by the keel. Would that be right?

Exactly, the transducer does have a slight upward signal and will reflect off anything it hits..The transducer is not a true out and down beam.

I have a thru-hull and one on the transom, and I think the returns are better on the thru-hull.  I did use the block, and cut a V shape in it to fit the keel.  I'd say it sticks down about 3 inches.  Here's a photo if I did it right:

The keel would block some of the Si signal to that side.  An (expensive) option would be to mount two of the Thru-Hull transducers and use the AS-Si-LR-Y cable to connect both to your unit.

Judo, the mounting option you choose should greatly eliminate side interference from the keel as you have deepened the transducer away from the keel. If you made a good groove cut in the block it should be level and not have interference from the keel. Mounting directlyon the keel anmd not in the middle would have caused possible issues.
One small suggestion is to build a block in front of the transducer block to ward off striking the transducer on an object.
Good Work... :)

After it hits the transducer, it's going to smack the lower unit on my engine, which is about a foot or so behind it!
That'll be a bad day on the lake!

Judo....yes indeed a very bad day on the lake..Maybe the diverting block could save the transducer.  ::) Although a lower unit would be expensive also.  The lower unit may be more rugged and withstand the blow. The transducer on the other hand might just break..
Just a thought...
Still good work on the install..

wrktoomuch, Check with thr boat MFG to see if the Hull has a spot built-in it for a thru-hull transducer,or a in-hull transducer this helps.

I will check as you said. Looking at the pics of the keel mount, I see that would not work as I do beach the boat occasionally and use it in shallow water. I just have to look for a low profile 2d thru hull and mount the  transom away from the tabs.

Maybe you should look at some type of deployable transducer bracket system?

Greg, doesn't HB make a low profile thru hull for a 997?

Yes, it is the same XPTH-9-HDSi-180-T transducer you asked about before.

Greg, would the XPTH9,DI without the SI work with with a splitter and transom mount. It looks a lot thinner. That's if I can find a suitable spot for the transom mount.

No it will not.  That transducer is for some of the DI model units.  Your 997c Si unit needs the larger XPTH-9-HDSi-180-T transducer for the Si sonar to work.

I understand that I need a SI transducer, but aren't people using the standard trans SI unit with a 2d thru hull for speed?

Yes they are but the DI model transducers are using a different internal transducer element than the standard 200/83kHz element we use in the Si transducers and the standard DualBeam transducers that are used for high-speed Thru-Hull and inside-the-hull applications.  The 200kHz element used in the DI transducer produces a smaller sonar beam which could cause depth reading problems especially at shallower water depths plus the 83kHz should not well at all.

I probably have the terminology wrong. Is the dual beam a low profile thru hull?

Don’t know if I would call it a “low profile” Thru-Hull transducer.  The body of the XTH-9-20-P tapers from about 0.95 inches to 1.2 inches.  This is the part that ends up on the outside of the hull.

We used to sell a Flush Mount DualBeam transducer (XFM-9-20) that would only stick out about 0.220 inches beyond the hull; but I don’t see them listed anymore.  That thing required a 3-inch hole to be drilled through the hull to mount it!

I run a 1198si and have an Air Mar B-60 thru hull on my Grady White. I also use the SI ducer on the transom with the SI/DB Y cable. This set up works great. I do have to manually go to sonar/ select transducer/ DB or SI. To switch ducers but as I said works great!
