I just recently bought the Humminbird PiranhaMAX 150 4-Inch Waterproof Fishfinder. The directions show a picture from behind the boat with the transducer 15" from the prop. Is this absolutely necessary or can I mount it further in. If I go the full 15" it puts me quite a ways out. Any suggestions?
Thank You.

The 15-inch rule is mostly for inboard motor type boats that have the propeller forwards of the transducer. If you have an outboard motor you can mount it closer. The only issues you would need to watch for is if you mount it directly in front of the motor/propeller as the transducer can cause an air cavitation bubble to form in front of them at higher boat speeds and this would disrupt or prevent the water from flowing through the propeller or to the cooling water intake on the motor.

I don't think it is so much of a concern of creating problems for the propeller as these things are pretty robust. It is more of the flow and cavitation that is created on the transducer itsself which causes it to not work.
It is pretty hard to interfere with a motor prop unless you hang weeds and fishing line in it.
Now having said that it goes to say that props operating in low head dams or other highly aerated waters will cause the prop to lose its "bite". I just dont see it from the transducer..
