Title: Tried new release Ver 6.420 on my 998c
Post by: raricker on July 13, 2012, 10:42:29 AM
Hi,
Well I tried Ver 6.420 on my 998c unit last night to see what new and exciting features were released with this new level. Reading the release memo that indicated this level was activating NEMA 2K functionality, I was hoping for more. A LONG time ago I noted a problem I found w/ Waypoint Management running with both Lake Master and Navionics chips inserted in the unit. I checked to see if this problem was also fixed and determined it was not.

Looking around at the new screens that are enabled w/ this release, the NEMA 2K stuff is really neat. Having a separate "select readouts" option when viewing these new screens shows that there was "some" thought used in their development.

The new release adds about 4 new screens (I didn't count) to - what I like to call - the View/Exit rolodex loop of displays. Since my boat/motor technology DOES NOT support NEMA 2K I looked to the "Views" menu column to disable these screens >> shouldn’t that be the place? What I learned is that the  "Views" menu column DOES NOT support disabling the NEMA 2K screens. Is this an oversight or is there some "global" way to disabling NEMA 2K feature altogether? >>> I could not find it. So I removed Ver 6.420 from my box and went back to Ver 6.180.

I look to the form to help me resolve this "problem". Hopefully HB support will also chime in.

Take care,
Roger

Strange… when I just tried it on the 998c Si unit in my office I could hide the Views just fine.  I did this in the (forced) simulator mode as I do not have any engine gauges here in my office to test this with…

There should also be a few adjustment menus for the gauge readouts as well (under the Setup menu tab).

Hi Greg,
Thanks for the quick reply. It took me at least a dozen load/reloads between 6.180 and 6.420 to predictably recreate what I was seeing (sitting in my boat at least 2 hrs in a hot/sweaty garage!). Also, personal Para dynes played a role in what I am seeing.

Note: the NMEA2K Gateway (Accessories screen) never indicated "connected" in Normal mode.

What I am seeing is all four NMEA2K screens are stuck in the (View/Edit) display loop (Normal mode) immediately after a fresh 6.420 install >>the event being created (I believe) by rolling thru the screens (using View/Edit) - looking around - and then enabling Restore Defaults. It appears that "some" display flag (enabling those four NMEA screens) gets stuck set and remains that way until you do a cold reboot. You can do Restore Defaults all day w/ no affect.

Once you do a cold reboot on 6.420 everything appears to (then) be fine. In the end this appears to be another Humminbird "phantom" >> The kind of stuff that keeps forums active throughout the world!

Take care,
Roger

Do these views allow split screen with say a chart view so that when navigating you can monitor the chart and engine parameters?

No.  The Views fill the entire screen.

For us bass boaters, not charters, having a separate unit just for this information is not realistic. Having a split screen with a chart would be beneficial, or at at minimum a digital readout choice for the chart view, let's say.
