Title: 898 new update
Post by: T.G on July 12, 2012, 08:14:40 PM
hi, the new 6.4 update for the 898 is available for the nmea data, to get fuel usage to work on this do you need a fuel flow sensor of some sort? or just the humminbird as eth nmea2k module ?
thanks trevor

The AS-ETH-NMEA2K module only acts to translate the NMEA 2000 signal into an Ethernet signal.  You would still need the fuel flow sensors or data from the motor for this to work.

thanks mate, am I correct in saying that the nmea2k components are universal, not humminbird specific? Because I have not seen any HB fuel flow meters & the like.
thanks Trevor

hi i downloaded the new update, i can see the new features while in simulator mode but when i go to normal viewing i cannot find the new views, would this be because i do not have the nmea data cable from my motor connected & therefore the unit cannot add it to the accessory list?
thanks trevor

That is correct Trevor.  The units will not show the Views and menus unless the correct signal is being received from the accessory.  In this case since you do not have an ETH-NMEA2K accessory (and an NMEA 2000 input to it) connected to the unit there is no signal to the unit so it does not show the Views and menus for it.

I am assuming that the connectors used are some type of standard NMEA 2000 connector.  What I have read so far is that there is a NMEA 2000 Drop Cable that is needed for this.  The Drop Cable is connected on the other end to a T-connector on the NMEA 2000 network.

I wish that the radar views would not show up unless there is radar unit connected. I had to keep turning those views off on my 898 unit after the last update.

Is there any thing else in this new update other than the NEMA data information?

I have no idea what motors have NMEA 2000 capability.

Yes you will have to update your software for the motor data to be displayed.

The only thing that we have been told about the 6.420 software is that it added support for NMEA 2000.  I also found out that it changed the name of the Transducer Select menu to Connected Transducer and I am sure that there were other changes as well.
