Just after posting on Sonars post about 798 updates just a bit ago I looked at what is currently on Humminbirds site verse what I have filed/saved and it appears the 898c 6.180 has changed for the 3rd time. At least the name has not sure if anything else has. The date has always remained as 03/01/12.
There was a initial update 01 Mar 2012 that was just a mess. Screwed everyones units up especially those using the Ethernet function with another unit.
Then a week or two later another one came out for the 898c that fixed most of the problems. I believe when I called Humminbird on this they told me a wrong one was uploaded initially and the correct one is there now or something along that line. Actually I believe one person told me the 1197 update was accidently put under the 898C's and another person told me something totally different, I just don't remember what...
(Side note: Eventually 6.250 came out for the 798s that fixed the Ethernet problems peeps like me where having with 6.180 (898c))
On HBs site right now when I do the download of what is current for the 898c I get a file name of:
590396-1_v6.180_9c5c6306457c4e2bb034a17004665e61.bin
Nothing in that file name appears the same as to what is currently in my unit from a mid March download listed below.
ae8b76db661e45d58134e3a420e2c92b.bin
Is there something different Greg? The date still says 03/01/12.
-
wolf. did you mean 898 instead of the line that said 798. was that a mistype?
or did you mean the two different units,,

There is some discussion about both the 798CI HD SI and 898C SI in that post. One has to read it slowly/carefully to get the drift of why the 798 is mentioned in a post about the 898. The main point is there is a different file name on HBs site for 6.180 for the 898 for the 3rd time since Mar 1st 2012. I usually check HBs site fairly often to make sure nothing has changed mysteriously and yup something changed (I just don't remember when I checked last, but I am sure it wasn't more than a week or two ago), just not sure what changed other than the download name of the 6.180 update for the 898C SI.
-
I am really hoping that some little line of programming has changed for the 6.180 898C SI update. I still have fairly major issues with my unit "auto" rebooting if I scroll from one screen view to another very fast at all. Sucks when it happens not just for the downtime waiting for it to reboot but for the fact I usually lose some data that was entered before it "auto" reboots. Like a recording I am on or a recently added waypoint just disappearing type of stuff. (I lost nearly 30 minutes of recording last weekend when I was recording that B29 on the bottom of Lake Mead because of this update flaw...)
The way I have seen HB handle the whole recent rash of ill updates I figured if HB makes a change they will just update the file but never tell anyone anything was wrong in the first place type of thing and just upload the file and say it was that way all along... ::)

wolfs4evr:
I totally disagree.
If Humminbird kept replacing the same version number update with a newer one,
and not documenting it, that would be the worse thing they could possibly do.
There's no way they could even remotely keep a handle on things if they did it that way.
I'm not saying that they have a handle on things now (they are probably trying), but doing things your way would quickly lead to chaos.
I think even the smallest of fixes would come out in a newer version.
-
Hi wolfs4evr,
I had the same problem ("auto reboot" if I hit the view or exit keys too fast) when I updated my 998c to 6.180. My problem "went away" when I loaded 5.700 and then reloaded 6.180. My suspicion is that HB has an installer issue w/ 6.180 on their Linux boxes (but I can't prove it).
PS. I saw this same issue on a friend of mines 1198c. In his case we will have to wait until HB comes up with a newer level because it came w/ 6.180. (Remember, the rule is you never install a lower revision of software into a box than the level the box came with.)
Take care,
Roger

There have been no updates to the 6.180 software. As ITG stated: if there were changes to the software it would be under a different version name like 6.181 or something.
-
I checked the latest HB code release for the 898C and it says 590396-1_V6.180_9c5c6306457c4e2bb034.bin with todays date..
the last posted 898 update was different..... the one with the march date..(ae8b76db661e45d58134e3a420e2c92b.bin)
the last three all say 6.180..
at least they added the release level in the code name. but now the name is 37 chac long... it was 32...)
Chuck
question is should I put the new 590396 in the 898 downloads?
-
I wouldn’t as there has been no update to the software. Hopefully this is a sign that they are working on whatever issue it is that is causing the long file names.
-
OK so the new longer name that shows the 6.180 is the same as the ae8b???
There is no code change only the name change...??????
we have got to get back to 898cV6.180 type of name.
37 charac is too long.
But at least it shows the release level now but not the unit type...
In one way I am kinda of leaning toward putting the level in that does show the release. and indicating it is a name change and not a code change..
What a dilemma...

Though only the name changed supposedly for the 6.180 update I put this one on my unit for the heck of it. Figured it couldn't hurt. I reverted back one level to the original update that came oem on my unit (5.7) and then put this one on. I just got back from a 4 day / 3 night camping excursion in Utah trout fishing at a small lake in the mountains. Not once did I have my unit reboot. I pushed buttons as fast as I could all weekend jumping from screen view to screen view and no matter what I did for 3 solid days on the water my unit never once hiccupped! Before if I jumped from screen view to screen view fast the unit would almost always reboot.
Don't know what to say other than I am WAY more happy right now with my unit. That pesky reboot always seemed to happen at a critical moment and now it isn't happening. I will test more next time out on our local lake where the only difference should be lower elevation and way hotter conditions. (Panguitch Lake, UT high of 80 F the whole time there / 8400 feet elevation. Lake Mead, NV right now... ~110 F / 1100 feet of elevation.)

Wolf, WOW this is something to howl about! Keep your fingers crossed! Roddy

My daughter kicked my tail! She caught the biggest Rainbow, the biggest Cutthroats and the only two CutBows... Pretty funny 3 ringed circus watching her trying to hang onto one though. She is use to a Bass that just sit there and she can lip them. She wasn't use to a slippery trout that is full of energy. I eventually had to use a scale with a hook to help her hang onto one for a picture. lol

Just got my 898 unit back from Humminbird. They had uppdated the software to version 6.180. Well as I told earlier the temp was not working after that prosess anymore! After less than two hours in use the software jammed. As soon as I go to the map or the menu it jams. Only god thing is that it can be turned of from startbutton.
Somehow I start to belive that I wont ewer newer again put a 6.180 uppdate in my unit.
Any suggestions? Is it worth to try to reebooth the unit and install an erlier version in it by using the Humminbird PC. Or shall I take it whit me next time when visiting the shooting range?

If the updates are in fact the same just downgrading mine back to 5.7 then back to a fresh download of 6.180 seemed to fix my problems. Worth a shot anyways. Can't hurt other than all your settings have to be reset.
Here is a copy of the 5.7 I used: http://www.outlawrc.com/stuff/fishing/Humminbird/898C%20SI%2023Sep2011%205.7/590396-1_v5.700.bin (http://www.outlawrc.com/stuff/fishing/Humminbird/898C%20SI%2023Sep2011%205.7/590396-1_v5.700.bin)
Here is a copy of the 6.180 that is currently on my unit: http://www.outlawrc.com/stuff/fishing/Humminbird/898C%20SI%2023Jun2012%206.180%20new%20file%20name/590396-1_v6.180_9c5c6306457c4e2bb034a17004665e61.bin (http://www.outlawrc.com/stuff/fishing/Humminbird/898C%20SI%2023Jun2012%206.180%20new%20file%20name/590396-1_v6.180_9c5c6306457c4e2bb034a17004665e61.bin)

Thanks wolf4ever..
So its possible to "uppdate" to an earlier version. In other words the later wersion will be owerwriten be the older one?
Kimi..
-
If your unit was originally a "5.7" unit or something earlier than that then you can revert. If so just put 5.7 on the chip and into the unit then turn it on. It will ask if you want to update, etc. After yes and the update is done you will get a error somewhere about the waypoints not this or that. I can't remember that error. I think that error comes up because 6.180 has a different waypoint management system on it. Turn the unit off remove the chip and then run back into the house and put 6.180 back on the chip and go out and repeat. Good to go hopefully. How I have done it. I have reverted back to 5.7 twice now. Back in early March I reverted back to 5.7 because there was a issue with the very first release of 6.180 and something different was posted on HB site mid Mar. Then again a week or so ago. Zero issues either times. I left all my waypoints on the unit, etc. Only thing I did before going back or changing a update is to make sure I selected reset on the unit so it was back to the factory settings before updating/downgrading/updating, etc.
This is the only way to "re-install" a "same" update. If you just tossed on a fresh download of 6.180 to the chip the unit will do nothing since it knows it already has that update. You have to go back to a different version to get the fresh 6.180 to go.

If you download 6.180 here is the vital statistics of it when you right click on the file and select properties to check against your download (at least the copy I have and what is on my unit):
Size: 26.3 MB (27,642,539 bytes)
Size on disk: 26.3 MB (27,643,904 bytes)
This is all identical (file size, etc to the download I have from back in mid March with the ae8b7.... file name). Dunno why the one I downloaded and put on my unit back in mid March hiccups (re-boots all the time) compared to the copy I put on it last week or so.
Here is the vitals of the 5.7 update I am using to revert back to:
Size: 17.9 MB (18,817,227 bytes)
Size on disk: 17.9 MB (18,821,120 bytes)
-
Good point about comparing the file bytes. The meg reference is rounded and not a true or accurate size indicator..

Thanks again Wolf4ever!
So no I wonder if I can leave the 5.7 version in my unit, will it work properly, or do i have to upgrade it to 6.180 ?
After yes and the update is done you will get a error somewhere about the waypoints not this or that Is this something that can be fixed or is the only way to upgrade to 6.180 ???
Somehow I would like to have an earlier version in my unit, at least until Humminbird release a software update that really works whitout bugs.
Kimi..
-
Dunno. You could leave 5.7 on it but not sure what effect that will have on the waypoints that are in the unit.
So far after 3 full days on the water I am totally happy with 6.180 now... I see no reason not to run it. I like the full SI screen view, waypoint mgt program, SOG/COG views, etc, etc that 6.180 gives you.
-
OK. thanks again!
Lets see what happens during the next week. I tell you when I know more!

I see you have a 898c SI. I then read the stats for the download on your 5.7 version.
I have a 998c SI and the stats for 998_v5_700.bin from HB are
18.8MB
size on disk 18.8MB ( 18,820,458 ) as of 5-18-12 download.
I had also forwarded this to Chuck and this may be what is posted in the sites download section. ( for 998 )

Mike as I get into this a bit more it becomes even more confusing..
for instance a file may show 26.3 MB size 27,642,539 bytes ...but the size on disk shows 27 MB 27,642,904 bytes.
Hmmmmmm

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_does_Size_and_size_on_disk_mean (http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_does_Size_and_size_on_disk_mean)
So going with that I guess size on disk is something one doesn't need to post/pay attention to per se. What really matters is to verify you have a full DL of a file by comparing the "size" by right clicking on the file and reading the value. "Size on disk" is a PC memory used value.
-
I have been going by size. I guess I will keep that train of thought..
I did not realize the amount of difference in units by level but will try to keep downloads on track.
If you guys have codes to share let me know thru a pm or email and attach.
Let me know unit specific type and full code release name..

OK. I downloaded the older software version 5.7 in my unit. Overwrote the 6.180. Now the unit is working fine. Except for the temp. readings that that doesn't work. But the importcompany allready promised to send me a new unit.
The problem whit the 6.180 software might be that it needs more space (memory) to work, that the 898 can offer.
