Title: help explain Sonic View
Post by: firetiger on June 17, 2012, 11:24:21 PM
page 40 user manual
Using the 4-way cursor control key move the to a sonar return. I understand all the readouts at the top of
screen except for #9 bearing. Bearing is relative to what? I want a view that shows the position at 3:30. A bearing value in itself doesn't mean anything to me. Any comments would be appreciated!

I believe it is the direction you are traveling relative to true North. As opposed to heading which is the direction the boat is pointing - often not the same as the direction it is moving.

Sounds reasonable to me, the 'relative to true north' part. However I don't think the bearing is a direction the boat is traveling. The view is a sonic view, providing the bearing on which the boat is travelling would be of little value. I think the bearing is the direction to the cursor postion. The question: what view shows the bearing on which the boat is travelling so I can turn the boat toward the cursor position?

I think if the boat is moving along, and it shows a bearing, it is the bearing in relation to
North.

But, I think if you put the cursor on a sonar object, then the bearing shown is
in relation to your boat position.

ITG is correct.  So 0/360 degrees would be in the same direction the that boat is moving.  90 degrees would be at a 90 degree angle to the right of the direction the boat is moving while 270 degrees would be a 90 degree turn to the left.  If you GOTO function at the cursor position than you can use any of the Chart Views should be able to show a direction you would need to go to get there.
