Title: Losing Cursor Control
Post by: kenzio on June 10, 2012, 03:56:19 PM
Last week as I was attempting to mark some waypoints on a recording of a trolling path, I realized that hitting the directional cursor controls did not stop the playback and allow me to move the cursor.  It actually locked up the unit.  I am able to generate and select "stop playback" to regain control of my unit.  This does not happen in simulatio mode.  My recordings on my SD card are also used as imput to DrDepth.  Has anyone else expereinced this problem?  Is there a quick fix or does the unti have to go back to Humminbird for repair.  Other than losing cursor control, everything else on the 798csi works fine.

I have a few suggestions:

First, to play it safe, fully charge and load test your battery, and check all power connections.
You could have a failing battery that is causing the lock-up.

Next, if you have waypoints,/tracks/routes saved on your unit, something
may be corrupted.  I would bring these into HumminbirdPC to
validate them, by exporting all NAV data to an SD card.  Delete any dups, and look for any that have invalid or incomplete coodinates.

Once you have a good copy on your computer, I'd erase all
NAV data from your unit, then re-load the corrected set.

Next, if you are doing sonar recordings, try and do multiple
small recordings, instead of one big recording.
The unit only has so much memory, and dealing with a big
recording is going to tax it.

Next, if you are not running the newest software, first I'd
search and see if there are any problems with it.  If there are not,
then I'd install it.

Good Luck.

Many thanks to ITGEEK for your suggestions, however just prior to receiving them, I returned my unit to Humminbird.  I was very willing to Pay the $200 fee (I'm out of warranty) because things were getting worse.  On Monday, when I went out, I developed a new intermittent problem.  When I turned the unit on, SI worked fine, however 2D was reversed.  The lake's surface was at the bottom of the screen and the lake bottom was at the top.  Sensitivity was also reversed.  "1" was the highest and "20" was the lowest.  That was the straw that broke the came's back.  I called Humminbird and made arrangements for returning the unit.  I was told that the turnaround was 3 to 5 days which is not bad at all.

I'll report back if I can add anymore info to this problem.

Just an observation, but it seems like the 798's have the
lion's share of problems.

Anybody else notice this?
