Title: Need some help figuring out the right settings
Post by: ravekiss on May 22, 2012, 09:52:28 PM
As you read in my previous post, i received the wrong transducer in the package when I purchased my 798ci HD SI unit about two weeks back. I received the correct one from Humminbird today and installed accordingly. I haven't figured out to take screen shots as yet so i used my phone to snap some images that were coming up. I think the side imaging is ok but i don't think the down imaging is set up right. Please take a look at my images and help me figure out what to do to get the best performance from this new unit. Thanks.

Those pictures actually look pretty good to me.
That might be as good as it gets.
I don't see how you could improve on them too much, maybe playing with
the sensitivity settings.

I think that Down-imaging is overrated.
When I had it on my 1197c, I was never impressed with
the images.
2D would show fish, and I couldn't make them out in DI.
I actually prefer 2D over DI.

Your pics look pretty good.   Is the water your fishing stained or clear???  We use ours on Lake Erie, which is extremely clear, and we have our sensitivity bumped up pretty high.  The clearer the water the higher you can use set your sensitivity.  Erie right now has about a 15-17ft water visibility.

They do look pretty good.  What did you have you Chart Speed setting at and what was the boat speed? Most try and run the Chart Speed too fast for my tastes.
Also it looks like you may have some of the left Si sonar blocked as it does not seem to reach out as far as the right Si sonar does.  Got any pictures of your transducer mounting on your boat?

Thanks for your responses. We fish in Salt Water (North East Atlantic) so definitely not as clear as lake water. Those images were taken mostly on our way back into the marina so it was a narrow strip. I think the chart speed was around 6 or 7, we were going slow, maybe 3-4. Unfortunately we dont have any mounting pics since the boat is in the water and we wont be taking it out until the end of the season.

I will be going back out this weekend and will play around with it a bit more. I need to look up how to take screen shots so next time I dont have to use my phone and will get clearer shots.

As always, I would appreciate some tips and tricks since I am so new to all of this. THanks again.

Install an SD or SDHC memory card (SanDisk brand is recommended).
Power the unit on and go to the Setup menu tab in the main menu system (two presses of the MENU button when on most Views).
Go to the Screen Snapshot menu and set it to “On”.
When you use the MARK button it will mark a waypoint and also save a *.png picture file of whatever is on the display of the unit (including coordinates to your favorite fishing locations) to the memory card.

Thank you very much...i will try that out next time I'm on the boat :)

Agree completly with the statement above.  The videos at this site http://www.dougvahrenberg.com/Videos.html (http://www.dougvahrenberg.com/Videos.html)  are worth watching.  Especially all the ones entitled "Humminbird Advanced Sonar". Super helpful in setting the settings.

With respect to the left side reduced image. If you dont have blockage (i dont think so but) check that during the sonar you are not going back and forth across the boat floor. ( as in port to starboard)  Some times you can shift the transducer and cause it to not ping in the right plane.
