Just purchased and had installed 1198SI c with new Humminbird radar on our charter boat. The unit has been shutting down and restarting on its own or freezing. Today it did this about 6 times. At end of trip after shutting the unit down ... it tried starting again on its own.
Batteries are new, voltage was 13.6 enitre day.
Any thoughts? Gremlins?

Well....to me is sounds like the latest update that was installed in the unit at the factory has some issues. Check and see what software is in the unti...and if it is the 6.180....then it could be the program in the unit. You need to call Humminbird customer service Monday and if they say send it in...I would take the unit right back to the dealer you purchased it from and request another unit. Good luck. These things will drive you crazy. You also may have a radar issue that is causing the problem.

I had a had the same problem. It was caused by voltage drop. Turn on the voltage display to see what voltage is at the unit.
Pay special attention to the voltage when you start the engine. When you start the engine it may be dropping below the 10V operating threshold of the unit.

Just because your batteries are new, that doesn't mean much.
They may be new to you, but you don't know how long they were on a store shelf,
and you don't know if they were kept in a fully charged state.
Also, just because you have 13.6 volts, it doesn't mean that your batteries
can sustain any kind of a load. It just means that they are fully charged.
Fully charge and load test your batteries.
Re-check all electrical connections, and physical connections at the back of the unit.
You may try bending the electrical connectors on the hot power wire out a little for a better
connection (DO NOT BEND BOTH CONNECTORS AT THE SMAME TIME OR YOU WILL BLOW A FUSE).
If your sonar is sharing a battery with something else, then get yourself a small
marine battery just for the sonar. You may have it hooked to the same battery
as your main engine. As Ddorriety said, cranking up the main engine may have pulled the voltage
down so low, that it caused the sonar to stop working.
I'd check the above things first, then worry about the software version if
you still have a problem.

First off: what software version is in the unit? It has to be running the 6.180 version for the radar to work.
How do you have the 1198 unit connected to the power on your boat? If this is through the boat’s electrical system than you may want to try temporarily connecting the unit directly to a battery to make sure that the problem is not a low power issue. Even though the voltage is there, the current to the unit may be too restricted.
If that does not help; try unplugging the radar to see if that makes a difference or not.
