I recently purchased the Humminbird 898c SI Combo and have it up front on my trolling motor w/XTM 9 HDSI 180 T transducer. I haven't had it out on the water yet this year but did let a friend use my boat. In Illinois, fishing is a high school sport but you need to find a boat for the team to compete. I let the local high school fishing coach (who I've known for years) use my boat so the kids could be in the state compitition. When he returned after the tournament, he told me he had scratched the bottom of the new transducer on some gravel. What I'd like to know is...when I turn on the unit, I hear a faint constant clicking coming from the transducer. When I shut it down & go to simulator...no clicking. I'll have it on the water next week to check it out but I'd like to know if this clicking is normal?

If you are hearing the "clicking" while out of the water then that is very normal. That is the signal for the transducer. Now, if you put the unti in the water and you continue to hear a noise....there may be a problem but what you are describing to me is normal. It is not good to run you units unless in the simulator mode out of the water. Good luck and hope thhis helps you.

The clicking is the transmit pulse sent to the transducer. When out of the water the unit is using a long transmit/receive time (screen will update slower) and so some can hear the transmit signal than (as opposed to when it is in the water). Running your units connected to the transducer while out of the water will not harm the unit or transducer but can make for some strange depth and fish readings on your unit…

If you stick you head in the water you will hear the clicks also..
Divers comment on this all the time..After a while you get used to it..
