				ITG, you must be prophetic.
 New units:
I will not disagree at all.

HB has set the stage for the replacement to happen.

We see newer units going into legacy status very quickly.
We see the elimination of extended  warranty.

We see code updates not being done on legacy units.

I believe that we will soon buy a new unit each year. ::) Possibly because code expires on a set date and the unit fails and shuts down..Nothing suprises me any more.. :-\

I hope it's not that bad Chuck.

The 1198 has actually been out for awhile now.
It's time Humminbird builds units where new/upgraded parts can just
 be snapped into place.
That way, maybe we can keep a unit for 5 years before upgrading.
-
I split this out as we were starting to hijack the thread.

My fault in the first place..

Now that would be nice to have replaceable mother boards or plug chips or........ ::)
 I vote 20+ for this..

				What!
When did Humminbird eliminate an extended warranty?

 From you
No extended warranty through Humminbird unless you are eligible for the Humminbird Select program:
 http://www.humminbirdselect.com/ (http://www.humminbirdselect.com/)

Is the select program a warrenty for extention for any unit or just for a select few..
 How does this work...
Or is select program a new way of saying extended warranty

 I have gotten confused again..
I must have missed the extended warrenty option on your site..

 Where did this come from?

With all that is going on these days I would not be suprised. No one has printed this. But again I can see motions toward this ability..(updatable upgradable components) which might be a good idea..
I have my thoughts and you have yours..
You sell and I buy.  we may disagree but that is our option..

I think the Humminbird select program is only offered to users
 with the higher end units.

 Abour new units:
I think Humminbird is going to come out with some bad-ass stuff
 next year.
I'm not talking about the 360 either.
 That's just a bulky transducer.
I'm talking about new main units.
They had better, if they don't want Lowrance to
 pass them up.

 Greg,
 Are you listening?
I know you can't talk about anything that you might know about it.

I'll be ready to replace my 1197c by then.
 Please Humminbird, Wow me.
-
I might be a party popper here, but I don't see where's the problem with Humminbird products or warranty.

The units have a 1 year warranty, which is the case for 99% of goods on this continent.
And I found perfectly fine to stop update for 4+years units. IF the said unit is working as advertised.

Don't blame Humminbird if YOU want to have the latest technology on the boat.
Humminbird, in their software update process, not only they correct current bugs and software glitches, but also put new features for free.

I've had numerous Garmin GPS receivers and their update are far less frequent, and don't put new features in it. It's only to correct major bugs, and still have a 1 year warranty.

I understand your point of view, you want unlimited warranty, forever updates and new units every 6 months. But everything comes with a price most of you don't want to pay.
And the people that have that kind of money, they change units every year to have the latest/greatest.
 So it's irrelevant for them.

 Have a good week-end everyone!

I've got zero complaints with Humminbird's warranty.
I've got zero complaints with Humminbird's customer service.
Humminbird is a first class company, there is no doubt about it.
I am most likely a loyal customer for life, and I will shout their
 praises to the high heavens.

 However,
I do have complaints with their software updates.
I didn't used to, but now I do.
I have an 1197c, and I was recently burned with the 6.180 update.
My XM weather that used to work fine, would not work, and
the machine slowed down to a crawl.  I think the amount of code running
on it with the update just was too much for the processor and memory
 to handle.

I went back to the 4.700 update (that's right, waaay back), before any of the fake down-imaging
crap, and that update has been rock solid for me.  I am not updating any more with my current unit.

Yes, we are very fortunate that the updates are free.
But, the competition, 'Lowrance' also has free updates.

The only complaint I have, is in some instances, the update will
cause your machine to malfunction.  Something that used to work,
and that you had complete confidence in, may get trashed with an update.

I say, if Humminbird is going to give us free updates, then that's absolutely
 great.  Thank You, Thank You.
Just please, please, please, test out the updates thoroughly enough (with every accessory that is
available on the unit), so that they don't cause us problems.

I don't get out to fish much, but when I do, I want my stuff to work the way
 it's supposed to.

 Amen.
-
I'm on your side on this one... Updates should be tested thoroughly before made available to public...

-
				I have a question.
Who tests the new "stuff" for HB..
Or is the "stuff" tested" at all....
what is the test process for interconnected function involving another mfg products?
