Title: Tidal info
Post by: kenrose on March 31, 2012, 10:18:50 PM
I just installed my 798ci HD SI Combo, was surprised that there are no tide charts or other such information available, at least from what I can tell....? I had a Matrix 55 and it had tide stations with a graph to show where the tide was at any time.

Doesn't come with the basic HB units.  You'll need to add additional software, such as Navionics Gold.  I bought my unit with it installed.

That software is in the form of a Navionics Marine Chart (salt water mapping card); not some software you can download to the unit.

Is that a real time tidal chart or an old forcast?
If old when was it published?
How does that work with storm surge for tides like the online stuff?

I’m guessing here Chuck as the tidal information came from Navionics:

 - I would guess that this is based on a chart according to the date, location and time.
 - I have no idea when the data was published.
 - I am guessing that this is information that was included with the map data and therefore is not interactive in any way with current weather or storm surges.  To be able to do this I would expect that you would need some sort of internet based communication or perhaps this is already broadcast over a radiofrequency?  Sounds like a pay to use service to me.  So this would mean a new accessory or perhaps unit redesign to accomplish this.  Good idea though I doubt that freshwater boaters would want it or want to pay for it it if is built into every unit.

All tide reports I know of are based on predictions, and are based strictly on known astronomical events (sun, moon positions, etc.). Therefore, there are no old or new forecasts.  There is no tidal information that I know of that is real time.  No tidal software can take into account the effects of wind and/or storms, therefore, no tidal predictions can be 100% accurate.  When I go to the tide information in my HB, it selects the nearest tide reporting station at that moment, then calculates the tidal information for that station using the Navionics software.

I’m not sure how far in advance the Navionics software is pre-programmed for, but I’ll bet it will still be valid long after I’ve retired my HB.  I have a watch that can predict the tides until 2099...not sure I’ll be around to verify the date, though.

2099.  yep long time without fishing unless we have a lake in the hereafter. ;D I sure hope so and well stocked..

The tide information we use at the coast is refreshed periodically and does take into consideration storms.

I was jsut commenting that with weather and radar as applications we might see a tidal interface with this.

Yes a subscription fee but for coastal residents maybe worth it..
