Title: ALL SI Models - Smart cast
Post by: Gattlin on March 22, 2012, 11:53:49 AM
Model:
ALL SI Models
Suggested Upgrade:
Smart cast
Explanation:
Add smart cast transducer to port and starboard planer boards! See ya know ya love me:) This would absolutely Kick major arse for trolling the flats. Here in MN we are only allowed one line. And eliminating unproductive water in my trolling grid would be sweet.  Similar to quad beam screen left and right.
I might add I was her first..

That's a neat idea:

But, is smartcast designed to be trolled through the water?
I thought it was just for casting and looking at areas the boat couldn't get to.
Also, is there a limit on the distance from the smartcast sonar to the unit?
Also, how good would the sonar quality be?

I've never used one "Smartcast" but I don't see why it wouldn't work, it is after all just sonar. :D It's original intent is for stationary cast retrieve a little etc. But hey why not :) Range I think I read somewhere 75 meters but I could be wrong there. And quality all I need is just to mark fish the quality does n,t need to be top notch although that sure would be nice. Being how it's battery operated I wouldn't expect a lot.

If smartcast is designed to float, pulling it through the water
while trolling may get water into it and damage it.

Range is advertised as 100' as I recall, so you can bet that is a best-case condition.

There is a permanent battery installed, "5 year life".  The unit is fully sealed.

You would have to mount it on the board such that the transducer was always submerged, and not bouncing through the waves.

Subject to the 100' limitation and keeping it sufficiently submerged at trolling speeds, I don't see why it wouldn't work.  I don't think the vertical resolution that is offered is very good, judging from the photos I have seen.

I'm still PO'd that they don't support this product on my 1197.

Ya know it does, and the lower bow on an Ocean Liner comes to mind,,See and sonar is not it's only application.
