I am wondering if there are covers or caps that go over unused inputs. I don't know if it is necessary but I thought I would ask. I have a 998 and I am not going to use the RS232, Video out, temp/speed or Ethernet ports (at least not initially). The control head will be mounted on the right side of the helm and the back can get splashed occasionally. Is this a bad thing? I know that the unit is IP67 Waterproof/Submersible so getting wet shouldn't be an issue. What about dirt/dust (towing boat down a gravel road for 30 miles)? I just want to protect my investment. Thanks. :)

depark1,
your post sounds like you haven't opened the box yet. My 898 came out of the box with small caps on most plugs. There is also a cable collector that is going to shield the cables on the back of the unit.
Towing 30 miles down a dusty gravel road?
Do leave your rods & reels on deck or out in the open when going down this road? My units are mounted when driving short distances on paved highways. Unmounted if traveling long distances or dirt roads.

No caps at all on the 3 of the 4 I listed. I found a small package in the box that has a blank that works with the cable collector. The 2 in the bag are for the Temp/Speed and the Communications/GPS. I just found them. I have the control head mounted on the bench to use it a bit before I mount it on the boat. As for the 30 mile bit, I agree not to have it mounted during such a situation. My overstated point was dust of any sort. Thanks for the observation.

I found on another thread that there is supposed to be a rubber cover for the Ethernet port. Does anyone know where I can get one? Are the RS232 and Video out supposed to have covers as well? Thanks

Hi depark1,
Here is a shot of the back of my 898cx SI unit as it came from the factory in the box with all the standard covers. The 4 uncovered ports are covered by the main cable connector when attached to the power source.

Well, mine does not have that. :( What to do? Have any suggestions?

Simply contact Humminbird Customer Service...gieb them your model & serial numbers and purchase date. Tell them what happened and they should send you out what is needed. You could also e-mail them the pics. Guys...I have mentioned to Hummnibird ( Johnson Outdoors Inc. ) that we need a neoprene cover that will fit iver the 898, 998 and 1198 units while they are mounted on our boats whether it be mounted with or without a Ram Mount. It would be very nive to go that extra mile to protect our BIG investments with something.
