Title: Need help installing thru hull Ducer!!
Post by: tomb.rx on March 06, 2012, 10:32:58 AM
ok so i want to move my 798 SI from the side of the boat to inside the dash board and take out the old fishfinder thats there now that i only use when moving at high speeds. 2 questions 1 do i need to get new kind of connections instead of the quick disconect that my 798 is on now?? Also i know i need the y cable and the thru hull ducer!! any advice of how to and where to install that ducer for best performance i have a 482 nitro fiberglass boat!! also i am wondering how does the unit know to switch between SI ducer to high speed Ducer without me manually switching it.  thanks in advance i love this site !!!  ;D      i just wish i can put an SI unit on the trolling motor without having interferance  ???

Tomb.rx,

1. No need for the Y-cable. What you need is a TS3 Switch it has a 'Y' on it. About $90.00USD from Humminbird.

2. Each time you switch transducer you will have to change settings in the drop down if you are using two differant Part number transducers.

3.' CAUTION" Shoot thru hull inatalltion will not work on cord hull boats!!!! Check with MFG of boat some have a spot in the hull for the transducer to mount.

4. only use transducer setting/potting compond, not two part glue.

Hope this helps.  Roddy

i have a thru hull ducer in now for a older EAGLE unit! and i read about guys using the old ducers from their old units and connecting them with a y cable to the new SI units is that true???

It kind of depends........Airmax makes some that are dual units functional.  Other considerations are the frequency of the crystals and program mode of the unit support.

Your Eagle unit may be only 2d and I am guessing 200kz or maybe 83 or 85 KB....

Several of the guys here experiment with transducers and may offer more insite..

tomb.rx,
I am assuming that you are referring to an inside-the-hull transducer and not the Thru-Hull type transducer that is mounted under the boat’s hull through a hole in the hull…  The transducer you will need is the XP-9-20 inside-the-hull DualBeam transducer.  It will come with a packet of two-part epoxy which is what we recommend using to install it.  Please test the installation location prior to starting to install this transducer.

We make an Indash Mounting Kit (IDMK) for both the 798ci Si model and the 798ci HD SI model unots.  The IDMK-700 goes to the older 798ci Si model and the IDMK-700E goes to the newer 798ci HD Si model.  Each has a connector collector that comes with it that is used for indash mounting.

The AS-Si-DB-Y cable that I believe you are referring to does not switch or change transducers,  When connected; the 2D sonar always comes from the inside-the-hull 2D (DualBeam) transducer and the water and Si sonar always comes from the Si transducer.

If you would rather have the 2D sonar come from the Si transducer when moving slowly, than you need to use the TS3 Transducer Switch that Roddy mentioned.

The AS-Si-DB-Y cable is easier to install, easier to use and costs quite a bit less than the TS3 switch does.
