I am a newbie at all of this.
Question: The screen on my 798 ci scrolls from right to left. I am assuming that a fish entering the sonar cone directly in front of the boat is showing up dead center on the screen. Where then does a fish on the extreme left of the cone or right of the sonar cone show up?
Thanks for your time.

They will show up beginning at the right most part of the screen as the beam touches them and at a level consistent with your depth selection.

DD - since you said that your screen is scrolling from right to left I assume you are viewing either traditional 2D sonar or down imaging sonar. The question you pose illustrates the problem with both 2d and DI. Truth is you don't and can't know from either 2D or DI to which side the object is or if the object is directly below you. Only SI can give you that info and is why, in my opinion, SI is generally more useful. And DI has limited usefulness.

That makes sense to me and I will use my si more as I fish in a very deep lake. Will set the depth to around 100 ft and my si range to about the same, would that make sense?
thanks for your time.

Yep that will work to a point.. I take it you are loking for suspended fish and not on the bottom.
Once below about 40 feet and at that 100 foot width range you will be looking at a small target.
Bait balls will show up fine.
You might want to look at the DI instead of the SI...
Now if you are looking for whales then it will be real good.. ;D
