I am purchasing a 798 ci HD SI. Is it true that the side imaging only works when the boat is not on plane? If so, I assume this is because the placement of the transducer on the transom causes the sides of it to be out of the water when planing..If this is the case, would it be possible to place the transducer on the bottom of the boat, at the aft end of the keel, so it will always be submerged even on plane and have unobstructed side to side view?

To get Side and Down Imaging you have to be around 5 mph or less, sometimes you can go a little faster but not much. It is not a matter of being on plane, speed is the issues which causes turbulence.
Doug Vahrenberg has a 9 video seminar to help you get the most out of Side Imaging, it is worth a look.

It is not that Si sonar won’t work at higher boats speeds: above about 5 -6 mph the units cannot show the detail in the Si sonar that they can at slower speeds. So while Si sonar is capable of being used at higher boat speeds: they just do not show the same level of detail that is possible at lower boat speeds.
On those boats that cannot get Si sonar to work at the higher boat speeds it is due to the placement of the transducer. Note: Not all boat hulls allow for the placement of an Si transducer that will allow for both good high-speed 2D and Si sonar readings. Your boat may or it may not.

How does chart speed relate to boat speed?
How does ping speed relate to boat speed?
How does all of this effect the display?
Especially the length of a target.
