I looked on the Humminbird website and I can't find any information
about what the download does, fixes, or adds.

Greg,
Do you know?

AH ----Ha...an after thought...

Could 6.18 be the missing link for the 360....  ::)

Would that be nice... ;D

I see the intent for the 360 but it has to meet performance to be viable..

It is very common that there are little or no details listed in the description of the S/W download, on the HB site.  The best I've seen is a couple of one liners.   The current releases on my account, while not recent, have no desription.  This is for a 797 and 798.

I hope it is the start the deployment of 2012 enhancements, that someone said were suppose to be released in January.  A month or two late, is still ahead of time in the vaparware world! :D

360 H/W is not scheduled to August.  No way the S/W would be that far ahead!

You never know I'm sure if somebody wanted to they could make up an update post it.Then if somebody wasn't paying attention you could upload run it in your unit and your face would go like this...First excited to get a new free update.. ;D...Then the oh crap as you notice something isn't wright.. :o...Then mad as hell cuz you know you've been had... >:D...finally totally bumbed cuz your unit is toast from some virus... :'(....and as you can tell work is slow and I'm BORED to death...lol  ::)

Now there is a view from the paranoid!  :D   LOL

Any hacker that wasted time writting a virus for HB hardware and hacking into the accounts at the officail site, to target only 1197/98 owners, I think would be traced to a HB competitor very quickly. ;)  Or is it a conspiricy from HB to get owners to buy new units??     Get all those old ethernet 1197's exchanged for new 1198's so they don't have to work on a 360 workaround??   :D :D :D

Yep Fuzzy I like the 2nd theory better...Makes perfect sense not only will HB not have to worry about making the 1197 work with the 360 but just think of all the 1198's they will sell...I don't know nothing about computer viruses or how they make them or why...I just know better be safe then sorry... ;)

New update version 6.180 for 1197c SI, is it me or did HB change the update names?  Do not understand why, it will make it difficult in the future to keep track of software updates!!!

The name of the file is "278dc4f848c449ce99ef64ca21f6b3c9", it is a bin file??????

Dont know George.  Trying to get a handle on this...
I saw the same file name as you.

I wonder if a pre-release got out and the final release name has not been applied. Especially since there is no desription of the release..

I am holding off on any install until we get some explaination or validation..

Post by: sonar2000 on March 02, 2012, 10:29:48 AM
OK, here is the facts..well at least the current answer.
the long name bin file for the release is just that.
There was not a known reason for having the new name length or selection of characters. Or would this revert back in the future to the shorter more descriptive name..

I did ask that it be reconsidered to issue releases in the original format as it was easier to know the level of release.
I cant equate a level in the long name.
It was said that this issue will be taken forward and was told it would be written up and forwarded.

I guess we will have to wait for the next release.

Also the 898 is in the same new format..

I am patiently waiting in the background to watch the boards light up from possible bugs in the new 1197 software version....

I see no "have to have right now feature" in any update (past or present) that would nudge me into being the "guinea pig" for spectacular "I gotta have it right now" update features...

I've seen nothing since the stable 4.750 that benefits my methods of sonar use...

I will wait .....and watch.... :-\

I think most of us will take that approach...wait for some one to take the step.
If I had a spare unit right now I would go ahead and try it..
If anyone does....let us know the results and what you see new...

Denny which of that link applies to the new long name release..Or does all of that apply in the release..
The announcement is an older release from HB on upcoming possibilities for software considerations for 2012..
Or am I missing something here..

I WAS going to take a chance myself and download but can get from the computer to a S D car for some reason.  Went through the Humminbird P C way but once I load my S D card into the computer and click next.and try to download....that is as far as it will go.  I have the new update loaded on my computer and never have had this problem.  My Humminbird  P C is 4.1.   But I'm not afraid to download the update....never had any problems.

Calli, is 6.18 for the 98 models.  I thought it was for the 97 unit...
Just a guess.
(edit)
Never mind .....I just saw a post that said it was for the 98 also..
I think what confuses me is that 6.180 downloads as (278dc4f848c449ce99ef64ca21f6b3c9.bin) for the 1197..

I do hope they will go back to the short file name on releases.

Let us know if you see any thing else or improvements on the new code..

I will be out on the water Monday...if not Sunday after church to test.  Once the update is accually released and sent from Humminbird...I have total confidence that everything would be ok.  One thing is neat to see is the 360 screen.  On simulator mode...kinda cool but not anything I need at this time.  Also, if anyone uses radar...then this update will allow that to happen.  I'm just suprsied that this updated software covers so many units and not just a couple in general.  The email I received has youtube videos demoing the updates...which is neat.  I will give more updates once I see anything new.

Thanks Calli.  Look forward to your water time...Also are you thinking the long file name is a pre-release of the 6.18? I asked HB support this but they did not know...

Fuzzy..I dont think you can re-name as the execute file looks for that particular name..
We need to check on this...
If I had a spare unit I would try it but dont want to lock up the working one right now. (waiting on the bootstrap AS PC3 cable to be released..)

Calli...One thing I am still looking for is: can the 360 be recorded and is there an external viewer if we do record...

Thanks Chuck

I think it is just a binary file, and unless the prior release knows what the future release name will be (unlikely), it is reading data out of the file to be able to tell if this is HB code.  If they release these changes for the 798ci (hope, hope), I will let you know.

File names have changed, even the existing ones.
If you go and proceed to download an existing file such as the 5.840 for the 798 you will see it has changed to the new numeric name.
If you want to keep track just create a new folder and name it the model/update version and drop the bin file in it....

You are correct!  I downloaded 5.840 just a couple of weeks ago, and it still had the version name filename, and the date matched the release date.   It now has the extra long cryptic file name, with a 3/3/2012 date, and bytes match the other one, so not a new version.  Talk about a version control problem!   There is no way to match this bin file via name or release date.   Come on HB, this is basic S/W 101 kinda stuff!

On 2nd thought, this was probably done by the people that HB has manage the website.  I can't believe that any S/W developer would personaly use that kind of a naming scheme!

fuzzy,
That is why I am trying to create a software release table for references.

I agree that there was nothing wrong with the way they had done it.
You could look at the name and know which unit and what level..

1197c_5.550.bin

Can anyone tell me at first glance what unit and level  264aef727c306a77de16bc17c45a1d9.bin is?

Downloaded 6.180 for my 898 yesterday and installed. Went up on the river for a couple of hours in the afternoon. Install went flawless as usual and a couple of hours isn't enough time to play with all the new toys.
All I can say is "GREAT JOB HB" worth waiting for.

Go for it guys. Don't forget to reset to defaults before and after.

I also renamed mine the same as you did Chuck, did this to keep all of my updates so I can find them easily.  It would be rather difficult to sort out the new names which look more like a hexadecimal address, do not know what HB is thinking!!!!!

If a person has 2 different units, with the new titles it would be too easy to use the wrong update on a unit.  Do not know what would happen and do not want to try it.

I think I have read where  HB Greg has had multiple unit versions on a SD chip, that he used to update store displays.   If  I am remembering correctly, that means there is an embedded ID in the S/W, and can't load a different units version.

I do think you are right and it will probably work fine.

Which is one of the reason I am trying to get the downloads updated and also have a quick reference excel file for review.
