Title: Screen Refresh - Normal vs Recording
Post by: LocDown on February 27, 2012, 10:45:38 PM
Should I bump my chart speed up when I'm recording my sonars? The screen refresh rate is way slower while recording than during normal scanning. I can get pretty good scans viewing with humviewer but it doesn't show up as well on the FF while recording, only during playback. Also, when reviewing in humviewer, my 2d isn't sync'd up with the DI and SI for some reason. It was ok when I replayed recordings from the 798 tho. SD card is the same.

PS. How much processing power upgrade is the 998 vs 997? Can it refresh at the same rate, recording or not?

It will be a little slower whern recording especially when the processor writes to the sd card...
Dont know the differece in speed between the two...

When I'm recording on my 998 I see NO difference in the screen speed between recording or not recording...

DD, you are correct on the 98.  I think the older 97 units do slow a bit on record.

I just cant afford the new stuff and the 360... ;D

On my 1197 I only see a pause when it writes to the card.......but the speed is normal when not writing...even during the internal record time..

But that is an older unit...

Thanks DD

When I take a snapshot it will pause for a second as it writes to the card like you said but when I'm recording the screen moves at the same speed as if I wasn't recording..I not sure how it works but would the size and type of the  card being used have anything to do with the screen slowing down when recording?

DD, I just dont know.  I get the same pause on snapshot but it may be writing a bigger file at that time than on a sonar burst.
I dont know the size of the recording that is sent during the recording process...But am sure it is less than a snapshot..

It does seem like every thing this product does is single thread. Or at least on a priority basis with screen refresh a bit lower than others..

I would guess my question is: when the screen pauses and then starts back up did we lose any display or is that buffered while another process is taking place.

Also on the 997 I am thinking there was a change in the operating system between the 97 and the 98's.

I would suggest that LocDown try speed changes and see if it makes a difference.
Hopefully he or someone else with a 97 can do this and let us know..
Stillbear, and George are good at this also.  As well as JollyRoger.
We have some knowledge here so maybe someone else can jump in.
Roddy dont you have a bunch of units...?

I will have to try some stuff while I'm out this weekend. It's a class10 16gig card by Wintec.
Also, does changing the chart speed affect the recording speed?

Hey LocDown.....I use a class 10 16 gig  i think its made by scandisc. So i dont think it has anything to do with the card it must be the different processer in the 997.I hope somebody else with a 997 can let you know if it happens to their unit when recording so at least you know its not your unit.I dont think changing the chart speed changes the recording speed...But i could be wrong when you go out do some experimenting and let us know...

Well, I went out today but the waters were very choppy. Setting the chart speed faster did help with what I saw on the screen but I don't know if it was actual live scan or delayed a little bit.
Man, I don't know if I really want to sell this and get the 998 instead.

well, i've found a pretty good chart speed while recording with my current SD card. With speed about 0-1mph chart speed 4 i can actually see stuff at a good rate.
FYI, I was using the mph from my ipilot remote instead of the 997. The speed jumps around too much for me. Maybe I should mount it somewhere else.
