You will have the ability to remove the readout boxes on the Left side of your Side Imaging View and now have the depth and the temp displayed at the bottom of the screen. Now you can maximize your viewing area for Side Imaging. This software will be released in January for the 898 and the 998.
Will this software update be option for the 997c ??

According to this yes. Gary Removable Readouts for 800 900 Series Side Imaging Units.MP4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kcnh8nVcGo#)

Gary,
That did not say anything about the 997 unit getting this software update. I don’t know that it will (or will not) but wanted to point out that it jus said that it was a software feature for 2012. Not all units will be able to run all of the new software functions that are being rolled out this year.

Mudlure:
That's exactly what it means.
Once your unit is tagged as a 'Legacy' model, it won't get the same Humminbird corporate attention as the newer models.
But,
Software updates may still be available for it, for a number of years.
If you want to stay on the cutting edge, then replace your stuff at least every two years.
This is not Humminbird or Lowrance's fault. New technologies are always being thought up.
You can't expect to have 'the best' for long.
I suggested some time ago that Humminbird should build their units so parts can just snap
in and out (screens, chips, maps).
That way, you could have the best for a little while longer.

How nice would that be to spend a one time fee and just keep getting free updates for life.If that is how it worked I don't think HB would be in business for to long.To keep up with technology and always have the best of the best well that cost money...It sux but IT IS WHAT IT IS.....

What DD said is true.
Consider too that the software updates that add new features to your product are free. We have to pay the people who write and test the software for these new additions and would not be able to do so unless they were going into units and could generate additional sales dollars.

Greg on my post above with the 998 unit underneath it in blue words was what it said For 2012 removable readouts for
800 an 900 series units. Thanks Gary

Just checked for updates and the latest for my 998csi is Ver 5.700 dated Oct, 2011. If the new version is out, can someone point me in the right direction?

You have the newest version so far. Go to HB Support make a account register your unit and HB will send you the
updates as they come out. Gary

Even though we do get free software updates, which is absolutely fantastic.
At some point, our old hardware won't be able to
take advantage of the new features, or there will be
better hardware.
An example is the 1198's brighter screen as compared to the 1197.
Software updates for life won't do anything for a new, improved hardware system
component.
At some point, there will no longer be new software updates for your current model (if you
keep it long enough).
So, the hardware needs to be replaced about every 2 years to keep
the very best of everything.

Is this software pre-loaded on the 998c SI, or will I have to download it? Just curious here. I have a 998c SI that will be here this coming Friday, and I would prefer to turn off the side display boxes as seen in the video to be able to utilize the full screen.
Thanks
Will

Will you will probably need to download the new update.Gary
-
You will have to download it Will, as the software has not been released yet and so will not be in newly manufactured units yet.
