Title: ALL SI Models - allowing own maps
Post by: pebe on September 03, 2009, 05:19:21 PM
Model:
ALL SI Models
Suggested Upgrade:
allowing own maps
Explanation:
Allow users to load their own maps into the Unit.
So that they can have a map on the screen, specially when there is no map available.
For Example, a Lot of Waterareas in Germany are white(on the screen yellow) fields.
There is no map manufacturer where you can buy maps from.

Best way would be if HB allow map formats created from Dr.Depth Software

I'd love this too, for exactly the same reasons.

Excellent suggestion! I use Dr D in my Lowrance units....if I were able to make maps for my Bird I would sell my Low units. :D

The Navionics depth info for the area I fish is very disappointing.  I would love to be able to overlay Dr. D data over the base map or create a map in Dr. D and use it on the bird.

I am trying to get the 3df to make HB maps or at least put the data in the HB       it is a .csv file so should be able to make it go back over.  chuck

Yes I really want to be able to load my own maps that I make in DrDepth.  I currently use a small Lowrance handheld GPS along side my Humminbird that I load my maps into.

At this stage, if I ever upgrade, I'm afraid I will get a Lowrance HDS unit so I can have one unit that does it all.

Users have been asking for this feature for a number of years, but Humminbird haven't responded. :(

This is #1 on my wish list as well.

Might any of the Humminbird guys adress if this is likely to be included in a future software update?

I can address it:

“maybe”

I don’t know what the Engineers and Sales/Marketing folks have I mind for future functions and features.  Even if I did I would not be able to keep my job if I posted about them.  :(

Yep,

wouldn't be Jolly, if you had to move for a "minor" issue.
Although other maps would be a big step for mankind aswell as nmea2000

There are so many uncovered areas on navionics maps, would be awesome to be able to add some additional informations.

I would agree with this suggestion.  It's killing me to not have this ability.  I love both of my Humminbird units with the exception of the map capability.  If there's anything we can do to petition this, I'd be happy to help.

 :o Map ! Map! Map !
A lot of guys are able to build a custom map ....
The first "own Gps map" was build at the time of the first "map handle gps" (around 10 years old)
So.. why HB haven't relase a free batch program to compile map by the usefull GPSmapedit (http://www.geopainting.com/en/ (http://www.geopainting.com/en/)) ?!?!

Since Johnson Outdoors (parent company of humminbird) just bought Lakemaster, I think the chances of this happening now are slim and none.

Greg; keep a tight lip.
I too use a second unit for (Gar^$*&) for charts.

One unit for GPS/Charts.
One unit for Radar.
One unit for ASI.
One unit for DSC.
One unti for XM WX.
One unit for Comm.
One unit for SI/DI.
one unit for Fwd Looking.
One over taxed elec system.

I feel I'am still flying a MH-60 Helicopter.

Enjoy Roddy ::)

I know what you mean Roddy.  Our boat looks like a C-130 cockpit... :o
Our boat set up and even the portable box has several units. (yes..different mfg's...) so that we can see (map) where we are, going and place trails.

It's owfull  :'(
I can pealse myself by using gpx format ..... however i spend a lot of time on HOW TO BUILD different type of cover, undercover, batimetric, bottom type, ecc ecc on a Lake .. river... Maps ecc ecc
And it's only a "funny idea"  because i like to look where i'm when i'm on a big lake, it's "so" , And It's usefull like a single wpt.
And a lot of fisherman are unable to build itself a map ....
And a lot of fisherman wanna usig "HIS SECRET MAP" ...
So i think that is a good commercial idea ... to sell a GPS/Fishfinder where you can build you'r secret map....
No ??
Or humminbird prefer a free android/mac tablet application on a Market !?!?  ;)

Agree on non buying argument, when not allowing own maps
Like to be in control, specially when maps are not that detailed level you like.

Fellow HB users,

I am new to HB with a 798ci SI. I use Dr. depth to make maps for other units. The HB can turn Dr. depth files to tracks which can be loaded in your HB unit.  I just made a overlay of some holes in a river near me and put them back in my 798.  Has anyone else done something like this?

I love the water

I just found out about this capability and am anxious to download the latest DrDepth software and try it out.  Albe posted this capability here - http://forums.sideimagingsoft.com/index.php?topic=3001.0 (http://forums.sideimagingsoft.com/index.php?topic=3001.0)     Perhaps he has tried it already.

you don't need DrDepth ;D There is a freeware converter for GPX or KML available:
