Obviously it requires skill and knowledge to detect and find fish specially in difficult conditions. Here are the different scenarios where finding fish may be challenging. Please post your ideas in terms of settings, color pallete, which sonar to use and or any other technique that would help detect fish.
Assume we are looking for predatory fish in the 1 or 2 feet in length. Since detecting schooling fish is obviously easier.
Finding fish in:
1) on top of rocky bottom (15-30 feet deep).
2) among trees.
3) on shallow rapids (say 7 feet deep water) over rocks.
4) laying on the bottom of a 40 foot deep hole.
5) Any other scenario you think maybe challenging to find fish.

You will probably benefit from Doug Vahrenberg's video site. He has a 9 part seminar demonstrating how to fine tune your unit, he uses an 1197 to demonstrate but it covers all of the SI units. Scroll down on the page until you find the seminars. There are a lot of good videos on his page. I have copied the seminar to my computer using "ANT.com", this way it is easier to review the videos several times without the internet slowing and stopping it.

Also, on this site is "Images, Snapshots and Videos" which have some very good information.
There are tons of information available, I search through a lot of forums, each site has something to offer, but this is the site I spend most of my time.
