Title: Recommended accessories for a kayak install
Post by: bigkahuna on January 12, 2012, 02:58:35 PM
I'm going to order a new 798ci hd si this weekend to install on my 13 foot sit on top kayak so I'm going to need to buy a couple other things to make it work:

battery - I'm trying to decide between a 5 ah gel cell or a 7.5 ah SLA.  I probably won't ever paddle more than 3 or 4 hours in a row and only during daylight hours (so won't need the back light).

memory card - Only going to use it to record SI / GPS data to transfer to DrDepth.  4 GB enough?  What class should I get?

Thanks!

Hi Big Kahuna,

I had an old UPS unit laying around, so i just bought a new, sealed, 12 Volt 7.2 Amp.Hr. battery that fit the UPS.
(The battery is a PowerSonic PS-1272 F2, and the UPS now serves as a charger...)

As a memory card, I use a 4 GB SanDisk Ultra II SD HC (15 Mb/s)
I have had no problems so far, using this card with a Humminbird 998c-SI

Thanks Tore, exactly what I was hoping to hear.  Didn't realize you were in Honolulu.  The wife and I are from O'ahu.  Aloha, BigK

Since the 798SI need the backlight, more so in the sun, you need to take into consideration a power draw of around 0.8A/h for that unit..

I recommend the 7.5 Ah SLA battery

Thanks, didn't realize the amp draw was that high.  I'll go with the 7.5 ah then.
