Title: Corrupted Files 798 CI SI
Post by: swabio on January 07, 2012, 05:32:35 AM
First of all to the contributors here, thanks so much for providing sonar/Fish Finder/ Side imaging noobs like myself with an awesome resource to draw on!

I have a question though, does anyone know if there is a way to recover corrupted files? The situation is that while using my 798 on my kayak, there was a problem with a power connection that resulted in loss of power a couple of times, I am unable to view the tracks / images that I was recording. I am spewing as I had an image of what I believe was a decent size bull shark out of the Pine River (QLD Australia) on what is now a corrupted track :(

Is there anyway to recover or rebuild the file structure to allow processing of the data?

I have lost power several times do to battery issues and lost my recordings.  I think the recording loses the "End of File" marker that tells the computer the file is loaded.  I have never tried to repair them and just erased them.

I do not know, but I thought that someone on one of the sites put the card with the file back in the unit and and replayed it on their unit, maybe if it works you could then stop recording and put an "End of File" on the card.

:-\ Unfortunately trying to replay them on the sounder did not work. The .son files have no data size to them.

Maybe someone will have an answer, but it looks like they are gone.  I have also lost files by shutting the system down before I stopped recording, again it loses the "End of File".

Anybody have any ideas on how to get the files back?

The benefit is you get to do it again, any day on the water is a great day.

Have Fun

ITGeek may be able to weigh in on this. Some corrupted files can be fixed and others depending on the corrupted piece of data may not.
And it may depend on how the corruption occured.
Missing end of file tag has been a computer issue since they were developed.
But, I cant recall in PC's how to fix that.

Thanks for the help guys....

I am confident the files are gone now.....

On another note, I am really struggling to use the SI effectively!

go to Doug Vahrenberg's site, he has a 9 part seminar, even though he is using an 1197, most of it is still beneficial in learning to get the most out of your unit.  There are a lot of videos on this page, scroll down until you find them, I am sure they will help.  I have downloaded them to my computer so they are easier to watch whenever I want.

You are very welcome, I review these videos all the time.

When I first time I reviewed the videos, I found that I had fallen into some bad set practices, this showed me how to set up my machine based on how I fish.  You do the basic set ups then tweak it.
