Over this winter I'm going to be moving my transducer up higher to help get rid of the roostertail i get when at full throttle,And hopfully get a better side scan image. When my boat gets up on plane the side image transducer wont be in the water so I'm gonna need the thru hull transducer so i can have sonar at fast speeds.Problem is i checked Humminbirds website and none of the thru hull xducers are for the 998.Does anybody know which xducer i need?....Thanx Jim

A little expensive but you might try the XPTH 9 HDSI 180 T.
Or maybe the XTH 9 DB 35 KW T.
I am not real sure about several of the other thru the hull as the HB site may not be totally up to date with unit/compatability of the various hull transducers.
Some of them wont so hopefully one of the other 998 guys will help..

Jim,
When you say “thru hull” transducer, are you meaning one that mounts through a hole in the boat’s hull (a true Thru-Hull transducer) or one that shoots the sonar signal through the hull of the boat?
If it is the first; do you want this to be a Side Imaging transducer or just a 2D transducer?
If the second; look at the XP-9-20 transducer. You will have to decide whether to go with the TS3 Transducer Switch or the AS-Si-DB-Y splitter cable (most prefer the AS-Si-DB-Y cable).
I’m guessing that you are meaning the second one here: a shoot thru the hull transducer or the term I like to use: inside-the-hull (there is no question which one you want when you use this term) as the Plastic Thru-Hull transducer (XPTH-9-HDSi-180-T) does list the 998c while the inside-the-hull (XP-9-20) transducer does not. we do not list the Side Imaging units as using the XP-9-20 transducer because connecting (just) this transducer up to a Si unit would not allow the Si sonar to work which would piss off many Customers. We have yet to figure out a way to both have this information available to Customers while not making also to complex for most to understand and use.

Hey guys....Greg I'm talking about the inside the hull xducer so looks like I'm goin with the XP-9-20...I have heard about the cables I need but don't know much about them can you explain the difference and what they do?Thanks Jim

DD, yep, a bit difficult to figure out what you need.
HB should add a page to their web site that asks what do you want and then make suggestions as to what it takes to support your needs. Or have some type of matrix to mix and match..
It is kind of difficult to match needs and unit with accessories that are compatable.
but then again this forum has the answers. It just takes the right guy to post back to you.
There are users of all of the HB products here and as forum members they should help..
There is a lot of information and experience in the membership.....
If Robert only had the time to make a page for new users to put down what they want and then have members fill in the blanks based on their experience...

If you just wanted 2D sonar at plane then you would just need the XP-9-20 shoot thru transducer and the AS-Si-DB Y splitter cable. I don't think you want to be trying to get SideImaging at 10+ mph. With this combo you should get depth readings at speed, but don't expect clear sonar feedback.
-
That's all I'm looking for is a 2d sonar reading at speed i dont expect anything great just wanna be able to have some kinda bottom info at speed. My side image xducer at speed now kicks up a hell of a roostertail and because of turbulence sometimes i get a good image other times i dont.So what I'm gonna try is move it up high enough so that when up on plane the side image xducer wont even be in the water but when i slow to 2 to 6 mph it will settle back down into the water and hopefully give me great images.I'm gonna use heavy duty Velcro so i can move the side image xducer around to find the "sweet spot"Its bad enough if i find a spot where it works great I'm gonna have to drill 3 new holes i dont want a Swiss cheese transom. At least now if i find this "sweet spot" i know i can have 2d sonar on plane using the XP-9-20 in hull xducer.Whats the deal with the AS-Si-DB Y splitter cable Does it have a switch or does it automatically switch between the side image and the in hull xducer?
-
the splitter cable just uses the shoot thru transducer as the 2d sonar full time and disables the 2d on the si transducer.
you can watch this video as it will explain it little bit better and plus, it's a video :)Rigging Tips: Console and Transom (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ii0sw6ec3Qc#ws)
it's not my video. I hope I don't get in trouble :/

Hey LocDown.....Thanks for the video ;D......That's just what I was looking for...

no problem
