Hello guys im new to the forum. I am going to be switching over from lowrance to hummingbird. I have been a lowrance guys for years but the hummingbird side scan impresses me. The detail seems much clearer and the cost is also a plus. I run a charter boat on lake saint clair and the 1198c is going to be my new best friend. Some questions though, I have heard I need dual transducers? Im going to be using through hull transducers. I have a 30' inboard baha sportfish where should I locate the transducers? Are the dual transducers going to give me a better picture? Are normal transom mount transducers better or the through hull? Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance

HB unlike Lowrance has one transducer that can do it all. It comes with the unit unfortunately you must mount
it outside either on the transume or the jackplate. Most people mount the HD SI transducer on the jackplate to protect
it then epoxy a 2D transducer for on plane readings inside the hull with a Y cable. Gary

Thanks... But i could of swore i saw a through hull side scan transducer.

F&G, Yes HB has a SI transducer and a mounting block. Best mounted close to center line and fwd of prop shaft. The use of a second transducer with a TS3 switch works well.

Some of them do and some dont. Rather than list each transducer it might be easier to go to HB site and look under products then transducers. Scroll thru the list (turn on view all) and then look at each and it will tell you which are si and which are 2d...

The XPTH-9-HDSi-180-T transducer is a true Thru-Hull High-Def Side Imaging transducer and is the one that you are referring to:

Whether you need it (or two of them) is all dependant on your boat and where you can mount the HDsi transducer(s). These transducers need a clear unobstructed view to both the left and right side of the transducer to work best. They also need a constant supply of clean air bubble free water to get depth readings as well. Now whether you can do this with one of the standard transom mounted HDSi transducers, two of these or if you have to use one or more of the XPTH-HDsi transducers we don’t know. Can you post some pictures of your boat hull? We would need to see what the overall transom looks like as well as what the bottom of the hull looks like.

Slow (trolling speed) usually is fine...It is the higher speeds that get the bubble interference and require a thru the hull additional transducer. If trolling is all you plan on using SI for then the single HDSI will be fine..
You can do some searching on this forum with different key words and see a lot of previous postings on need for a second thru the hull transducer.
