Title: Multiple Waypoints with the Same Name
Post by: Doc Stressor on October 28, 2011, 04:09:05 PM
I noticed that after I deleted a couple of waypoints using Humminbird PC, my 997 started using lower numbers to name newly entered waypoints.

For example, I had snapshot waypoints from S00001 to S00045. After deleting waypoints S00030 to S00034, the next waypoint I added was named S00042, even though I already had an S00042 waypoint. So now all of my waypoints named S00042 through S00045 list 2 different waypoints with the same name.

Has anybody else seen this?

Is there a work around for this problem?

Doc,
I did notice recently when I was cleaning up my waypoints, that I
had 3 sets of duplicates.
These are waypoint names that I had manually entered at some point.
I don't know if I entered them twice or not.

I thought it was weird that the system would even allow waypoints with
duplicate names.  HB customer support told me that the system
would not load in a waypoint if one with the same name was already
in the unit.

I suppose, as long as the latitude and/or longitude is different, then
the system currently allows duplicate waypoint names.

It looks to me that this is a bug in the software.

If I make some changes on the SD card with Humminbird PC, but fail to delete the existing waypoints before putting the card in the machine, I'll get duplicate entries. This is more of an annoyance than a bug since you can always fix the problem my deleting the waypoints in memory and reloading the new ones from the card.

But this is a different problem. The unit numbers each new waypoint created by the "Mark" function sequentially. It seems that if you delete some of these waypoints it will start naming additional ones starting with a lower number. The result is different waypoints with the same name rather than duplicate waypoints. That is a bug, since it can't be fixed other than by giving the waypoints different names.

Has anyone renamed any of your waypoints created by the mark function? For example, if I changed the name of my final mark created waypoint from S00045 to say "rock3", would the next mark created waypoint be S00045 again or S00046?
