I have a Humminbird 798 HD ci si mounted on my kayak. After 4 hours of the first trip in the ocean, I noticed some green liquid on my kayak. I checked everything after the trip. I found the one of the two power pins (the two pins on the unit end of the power cable, which can be plugged into the power port the of the 798 unit) has a green coat on the pin metal. The other pin has some kind of white/gray coat on the pin metal. Now the "green" pin has a much smaller diameter than that of the "white/gray" pin. I think this is caused by corrosion? The question how to avoid this? If this happen again, the "green" pin could totally disappear at its 2nd ocean trip on my kayak.

Yep! Salt water and DC power + Hot wire power leek = electrolysis.
1. Replace pins.
2. find and fix the power leek.
Radio Shack has pins that slip on and pinch tight.
Good luck Roddy

Thanks Roddy. Regarding the "hot wire power leak", I think it is because some salt water comes into the two power pins? Looks like all ports, including power input port as well as sonar data input port, on Humminbird 798 are not water tight. I also have Lowrance hds8 with structure scan. All of connection ports on Lowrance are water tight, but it's too big for my kayak. I am not sure how to fix this to make my 798 connections water tight. Any suggestion?

Vaseline gel, white grease, wax or replace the El Cheapo HB plugs.
