Title: 5.600 update
Post by: milosh on September 01, 2011, 10:26:38 AM
Hi folks,

First time here, and this place is full of great information.  :)

Can somebody explain me this: http://www.humminbird.com/FAQ.aspx?ContentId=3150 (http://www.humminbird.com/FAQ.aspx?ContentId=3150)

I've seen in forum posts that a remedy for "faulty" updates is loading an older version, but what I've understood from reading HB FAQ, this is not possible anymore from versions higher than 5.600. Is this correct? Has somebody already tried downgrading?

Best Regards,

Milos

I wouldn't recommend going back to an older version.
No one knows what fixes are in the updates.
I think you're always better off with the newest update.
If you send your unit in for repair, HB will load it anyway (if possible)
before they do anything else.  When you get your unit back
it will most likely have the newest update anyway.

From what it says, once you load 5.6, you can't ever go back.

It's a good way to lock up your unit messing around with
trying to install an old update.

What was included in software version 5.600?

Version 5.600 was a release that was initiated due to some hardware changes made on the following products:

858c  898c  958c  998c  1158C  1198C

This release was never placed on Humminbird.com.  However, you should note and WARNED of the following:  Once you move to a version higher than 5.600, you cannot move back to a version of software lower than 5.600.  We bring this to your attention because occasionally we have people who prefer the way a specific feature might have worked on an older release and want to move back to the former version.

We also advise that you pay serious attention during the upload process to the unit that you do not lose power or have an interruption of any kind during that process when moving higher than 5.600.  If you do have an interruption, the download will not complete and your only recourse will be to return your unit to our service department for the factory to do the upgrade to the newer version.  This is not covered under warranty and has a $69.95 service charge.

We have always used going back to an older update to help remedie bad or failed updates.  Sometimes features did not resolve or created new issues, and to have a functioning unit, this would usually be the only way.

Apparently as stated, with 5.600 they have enabled some new hardware features and going back could damage your unit.  I am going to find out more about this and see specifically which units are affected or if its only the ones on the listed and post it here.

I believe that the 5.600 software (and newer versions) was needed due to a parts (hardware) change within the units.  Whatever the part that was changed to will not work with the older software (I don’t know the specifics).  If your unit came new with a software version that was higher than 5.600 than going back to a software version older than 5.600 will render it inoperable.  If your unit came with older software in it than there should be no problem.

Like I said: this is what I believe the information means and I will also try and get confirmation of this.

Greg, please check on this.
does this affect onlyu 5.6 install?
Will this carry forward to 5.x or the next releases.
I am hoping this will be a 5.6 issue and not something we will have to face in all future releases.
As I said in my previous post.  We do need to go back at times..Especially since we do not write the code..
Code does ship defect free at times (in more than just HB products)
The user does not need to be restricted..

As I had thought: there was no 5.600 software release that made it into any of the units we produced and it was not released on the Humminbird web site.  The 5.700 version software was the only release since than and it does contain this same software change.  This was due to a component change on these units and will be from here on (until another component change makes for another situation like this).  If your unit was built with an older version of software than there should be no problem in going back to a software version older than 5.600.

OK< thanks, I may have been over reacting but as we have talked before and with a background in software I get mother hen worried at times.
And may read into posts at other times..
