Hello everyone
I'm now on the market to add another HB graph to the bow of my boat to work in conjunction with my 898. I would like to get one that can be linked to my 898 and will work well together. Any suggestions?
Thanks

I have a 798si at the console and a 787 on the bow and both interlinked together. I love it. I usually idle around and mark points with the console unit and then go to the front to fish them. I have a compass mounted to the front of the boat so i can see the direction and distance to an object. I can't hit a brushpile everytime but get pretty close. I have fished with my two units since spring and love it. I have learned to fish submerged structure so much better this year and it is paying off with big bags at weighin.
I don't have side imaging on the bow so i can't speak to that. I am sure it would be nice at times but the added price ran me away from it.

Your best bet for linking two units together is to go with the Ethernet connection. Depending on what you are wanting to share between the units will determine which models to look at. Any of the 800, 1100 and some of the 900 units can be Ethernet connected as can all of the 700 “HD” series units.
So what did you want to share between the units?
What sort of sonar do you want on the bow?
What sized display do you want at the bow?

I don't have a whole lot of room up front so I don't want to add another 898 there. I think either one of the 5 series or a 7 series would work. I don't think I need side imaging either since most of the time I am fishing known structure like humps and brush. Down imaging I think would be better? It would be nice to have the two linked though so I can do what war eagle said and cruise around with the big motor till I mark some spots and then fish with the graph up front. The unit I'm going to get must have mapping capabilities as well so that I can use lakemaster and navionics for my frequent lakes
War eagle can you go into some further detail on how you use your compass to get on the spots? Thanks,

after you mark a waypoint on the gps you can use the "go to" a waypoint feature. this will give you a magnetic heading (0-360 degrees) and a distance from the boat. Use this heading direction on the compass and the distance from the boat in feet and you can pinpoint the waypoint on the water.

T,
You need to look at the 700 series “HD” units then and use an Ethernet connection between the units. Mapping and Down Imaging sonar would mean the 788ci HD DI unit.

Thanks thats awesome. This confirms what I was thinking. Does anyone have this combination setup already? If so how well do they work together? Is there any issues when linking with ethernet? Also will the map cards that I have in my 898 show up on the 788 or do I need to buy separate cards for it? Thanks,

T,
Not specific to this combination, but we have not had as many issues with the Ethernet connections as compared to the InterLink.
You will have to have a separate mapping card for the second unit. The map data cannot be transferred over the Ethernet. Not sure if this is a limitation of the data stream or if this is limited by the map card makers…

Probably on the part of the map card makers. They do not want multiple units able to use one card. (shared)
I think you can still load the card individually but seperately over multiple units..Just not at the same time..
Just as we cant copy the card to another sd..
Lesson #12 in economics..
I would think the code to share a map card between units would be very line intensive for the unit and
may have to do with ownership of the card manufacturer.
Now having said all that. It would be nice to have one card shared between units.. ;D

I figured that I would have to add separate cards to the unit in the bow. For the money they charge for them though it would be nice to see some more detail on them. Not just on the water but also topographic information. It's settled though I'm going to buy a 788ci and link it to my 898 on the bow.

how did this work for you? I have a 898 at my steering wheel. I want to run a video out from it to another graph up front. I would like to view the same image at both spots.
