i have a 998csi and the depth reading is crazy it reads from 3 feet to 300 feet in 20 foot of water

Do you have another sonar unit on at the same time?
Does this happen when the boat is moving above a certain speed?
When the trolling motor is running?
Can you test your 998c Si unit on someone else’s boat? This does not have to be another 998c Si unit as most Humminbird units use a power cable and transducer that will work for this test.

yes up front on trolling motor but it was not on and trolling motor is out of the water
no it happens when you are stting still or moving sonar shows no bottom at all but side imaging works
no all my friends use lowrance may i should of bought lowrance
i have a new 2011 ranger z520 with a through hull transducer
on my last boat i had a 997 and it worked fine same set up on 2009 z520that i have now

Could you post a snapshot/screencapture of the problem?
Are you running 200khz only or 200/83khz?

here are some pictures it will be a wile before i can do the other stuff i work in the coal mines and just get to use the boat
about every 2 weeks

i have tried 200khz and 200khz/83khz it treid to work for just a second and then went crazy again not shure how to do the snapshot stuff never done it before have to read up on that

Well, first thing I see would be that the placement is going to get some turbulence issues being behind the step. Air bubbles and turbid water will be part of the problem when you are running. As for sitting still, if the transducer is fully in the water, it should be fine.

should i try to load an older update my last boat was the same thing in the same place with a 997csi and it worked fine

You can certainly try that. Install the older update and see if it goes away.

What unit do you have up on the trolling motor?
If this is another Humminbird unit than try connecting the 998c Si unit up to that transducer and try testing it. Set the Transducer select menu to the “Universal Sonar 2” setting for this test.
If your 998c Si does not work on the US2 transducer than the unit itself has a problem and you would need to contact the folks in the Humminbird Customer Resource Center at 1-800-633-1468.
If that works than you need to do a little digging in your boat and see if you can trace the transducer wire that connects to the 998c Si unit backwards. First see if the transducer cable is actually the AS-Si-DB-Y cable. If you trace back from the unit and find that the transducer cable splits into two cables than this is a sure sign that you (should) have two transducers installed on the boat. If this is the case, make sure that the correct transducer is plugged into each connector on this. The AS-Si-DB-Y cable is labeled with tags and the transducer cables are labeled within the first few feet of the connectors with bands or printing on the cable itself. The Side Imaging transducer should have something like “XPTH 9 HDSI 180 T” on it while the second transducer should have “XP 9 20” on it. If both transducers are connected correctly than try pouring enough water into the boat hull to cover the transducer (it should be installed in the sump area of your boat so you will have to temporarily disconnect the bilge pump for this test – do not forget to reconnect it! Test your unit again with the water in the hull. If it works than you need to carefully remove the XP-9-10 transducer and reinstall it (testing before you start mixing any epoxy!). If it does not work with the water in the hull than you need to re-install a new XP-9-20 transducer. Remember to test it before mixing the epoxy!
If there is no AS-Si-DB-Y cable used than it sounds like the problem is in the XPTH transducer itself and it would need to be replaced.
