Title: starting unit without transducer
Post by: nicknight on July 20, 2011, 10:39:40 PM
I have an old Humminbird unit and its mounting kit and want use my unit when it is not hooked up to the boat:

1) The manual for the humminbird Kit shows a 9V battery.....but the physical unit shows that it might be a 12V unit like my boat battery......what should the voltage be?

2) Do I have to short any pins or anything or can I just add power, NO transducer and start it up?

thanks,

nn

PS: I think I look pretty silly sitting in my boat on the driveway playing with the unit and it bugs the wife.  I would rather bug her while using it for bedtime reading. : )

12V and you only need the power cable.  A Sealed Lead/Acid or gel is probably prefered so no acid spills in the house.  Some have used 12V AC/DC adapters, as well.  6V lantern or an array of D cells, will eventually die, and you don't want that to happen in the middle of a S/W install.   When you power up, it should default to demo mode, with no transducer.

Alternatly, you could make a portable pkg that uses a transducer, if you have a possible use for it.  Doesn't have to be SI, could use a quad beam, etc.

thanks...yes on the backup thing too, it would scare me to do on a small set of batteries of off the wall.  I will do updates via SD card/ boat battery.

The Humminbird kit runs on a set of batteries....I never even thought of a wall plug.....how much current does it have to supply?

Current?  The unit is to be fused with a 3 amp fuse.  So a power supply of 1 am will be fine...
750 ma will probably do also..

Nicknight: I hanger fly my units on a 12 VDC wall plug all the time. Xducer and GPS hooked up or in SIM mode with out !

Nice for learning the unit.  Roddy :)

Depending on the unit itself: you may want to stay with a 1 Amp power supply as some of the units have a high initial start up current to them.

To get by the need for a transducer all you have to do is force the unit into the Simulator mode by doing the following:
 - Power the unit on as normal.
 - While the unit is showing the title screen (says something like: “798cx Si Combo”) press the MENU button.
 - The unit should finish starting up and show you three menu options: Normal, Simulator and System Status.  Use the Up/Down buttons to select “Simulator”.
 - Allow the unit to complete its start up and it should be in the (forced) Simulator mode.
The difference between this and the (Point Of Sale) Simulator mode that the unit automatically goes into when you do not have a transducer connected is that in the forced Simulator mode it will remember menu changes as well as changes to waypoints and such – just as if you were on the water (the POS Simulator mode does not remember setting changes).
