Hello All,
I'm currently using a 798c with a XPTH 9 HDSI 180 T transducer. My left side is bad because of the V- shaped hull of my boat, but the right side is perfect. So no problem so far. However, I feel that the PTP power of my 798c is reaching its limits when I scan wreck with 20m+(65ft+) of depth : conditions are not ideal here with waves, salt and unclear water, streams, etc. So I'm thinking on how to improve my installation to go up to 30m(~100ft+).
I see of course that I can upgrade to 898c which is given for 8kW PTP instead of 4kW for the 798c, however it is mentioned that 8kW is only reached with an optional transducer. Does that mean that I must install a second XPTH 9 HDSI 180 T in addition to the first one to have 4kW dissipated in each transducer ? If yes, then a 898c with two transducers should give a better picture for deep wrecks than with a single transducer, right ?
Other question : Is that possible to get full 4kW of PTP power of 798c on one side of my tranducer while disabling the other ? I think I know the answer but I want to be sure.

The 4Kw/8Kw PTP rating is only for 2D sonar, not SI

xSilmarilSx is right that the power ratings are only for the 2D sonar.
That 8kW rating can only be reached with a 50kHz 2D transducer as well – not a Si transducer.
There is no way to shut off transmitting to one Si beam short of cutting something in the transducer cable or opening up the unit. It still would not put anymore wattage to one of the Si beams.

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but I should not expect any improvement in deep SI scans by switching to 898c, right ?
I started building a towfish, with my unused XNT 9 SI 180 T (the compact transducer), it will allow the probe to avoid hull and surface disturbance and to probe a bit deeper.
